MAYOR OF NEW LYNN
INSTALLATION CEREMONY NEWLY-CREATED BOROUGH With fitting ceremony the installation of the first Mayor and council of the newly - elected Borough of New Lynn was held last evening. rpHE large assembly included many who had at various times held office when the borough was a town district. These included two ex-chair-men. The Mayor, Mr. C. F. Gardner, was formally installed by the town clerk, Mr. E. Greenslade, who presented a Mayoral chain. The town clerk said he hoped each retiring Mayor would contribute a silver link. The councillors were then installed. “It is gratifying to receive the honour of being installed as the first Mayor of New Lynn,’* said Mr. Gardner. “I remember the time when the district was first made a selfgoverning body, the members first meeting in a small room of a building later used as an hotel.” After congratulating the members of the council on their election to office the Mayor said the result of the elections was a clear mandate from the ratepayers to observe economy. That did not necessarily mean New Lynn wa3 to experience a period of stagnation. but rather that they must all work together to get the very best results from the means at their disposal. Speaking as an old colleague of the Mayor, Mr. G. Lawson congratulated Mr. Gardner and assured him of the council’s support. Mr. Lawson was elected Deputy-Mayor.
