STRAND
“IN OLD ARIZONA” FRIDAY Only two more days remain for Aucklanders to see the fine talking and sound synchronised programme now at the Strand Theatre. This includes the King’s speech, the whimsical address by Bernard Shaw, and the other “Talkie” features, also the glorious romantic story, “Street Angel,” starring Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell as waifs of Naples. The picture is accompanied by a musical programme played by the Roxy Theatre of New York. The new attraction at the Strand Theatre on Friday will be “In Old Arizona,” the first all-talking picture to be presented in New Zealand. What screen devotees are there who do not remember with pleasure the inimitable portrayal by Edmund Lowe of “Sergeant Quirt” in Raoul Walsh’s unforgettable Fox film production, "What Price Glory?’ “In Old Arizona” is a story of the romantic south-west in the late ’9o’s, the period before standardisation had erased its glamour and colour. Its incidents revolve around “Cisco Ivid,” a notorious bandit with a price on his head; his love affair with “Tonia Maria,” a passionate half-cast girl, and “Sergeant Mickey Dunn” of the United States cavalry, who was ordered to capture the bandit. Tom Barry', author of “In Old Arizona,” visualised Sergeant Mickey Dunn as a handsome Irish-American from Brooklyn; a boy with plenty of “it,” a heart-breaker, yet of undaunted courage, a he-man in every sense of the word and a soldier first, last and all the time. That is the role Edmund Lowe plays. Dating back 20 years from the period in which he played a marine in “What Price Glory,” it has even more colour, more picturesque - ness. Warner Baxter plays the Cisco Kid, Dorothy Burgess the role of Tonia Maria, and a score of the leading film stars and featured players are in the supporting cast. This line film will be accompanied by an all-talking programme of Fox Movietone celebrities. The all-talking supporting of Fox Movietone celebrities includes items by Beatrice Lillie, the famous stage comedienne, a selection uf Honolulu melodies by the Royal Hawaiian singers, and music by Ben Bernie. the American king of jazz, with liis band of 1G soloists. Finally there -will be a new' Fox Movietone news gazette with events of the day in talk and sound.
