Winter Trotting
FORBURY PARK TO-MORROW
Some Big Fields Engaged
WINTER trotting, which has become very popular with followers of the light-harness sport, commences in earnest to-morrow when the Forbury Park Club will submit an attractive card. The second day of the fixture eventuates on Saturday. A review of first-day events by “Abaydos” is appended. 1
M'HE Forbury Park May meeting is 1* * the recognised introduction to the winter session, which is followed by fixtures at Oumaru. Hastings, Addingi' n \shburton. concluding with the Auckland carnival on June 22 and 24. * In the improvers classes at Dunedin the fields arc usually of huge dinienions there being a large number of southland horses, which have become hieible at fixtures in the far South, in diition to those from Canterbury and Otago in this respect to-morrow's rTrd is no exception to the rule, and there is every reason to anticipate a .•turn UP" for backers of long-priced nnes in a few of the heats. Additional interest is given the fixture through the square-gaiters' classic, the sires' Produce Stakes, and the event promises to be an unusually keen one. Bayfield Trot Trotters who can c..rry weight on their back have a chance to show their ability here, and Dummy Bingen, who Jas won in the far South under these conditions, looks the best of those about the front mark. Kitty Patch and Silurian are fair trotters, and Peter Boy if ri"ht would have a chance. Sid Willces is partial to weight carrying. Kva Beta, Admiral Bingen and Tot I ogan are recent winners of harness i'.at'S while Kyra has scored several ernes’ this year in saddle. Favourites be Tot Logan and Sid Wilkes. Domain Handicap There is a big team oft the limit in this heat for improving pacers, and riven a reasonable chance at the get- . wa y, Ardgour, Lioncliff, Jessie Huon. Target and Nell de Beau should go well Lirako and Ellegro are nicely nlaced and Monopole, despite recent failures, will have plenty of followers. Sea Hawk is a promising sort while of those further back. Lady Zita and Sunny Bob have winning form to recommend them. Best supported may be Jessie Huon and Nell de Beau. Beach Handicap This is another saddle heat, and some pacers cf promise are engaged. Kate Thorpe can go quick and Lucky Dillon has a good Southern reputation, while Slump was showing improved torn at Ashburton. Milo Minto is overdue. Sunchild is a possibility, but the pick of the front lot will probably be Winnie Chrysler. Bingen Patch and Rita McKinney go well in this fashion, and Evelyn Locanda is showing good form. Mountain Chimes may be short of a race, but Liberal is a solid cusinmer Fancies may lean toward Winnie Chrysler and Milo Minto. The next event on the card is ths New Zealand Sires’ Produce T-otting Stakes, for three-year-old square-gaiters, run over a 1Z-
furlong journey. Acceptances closed with a list of eight, and the
contest is fully reviewed under a separate heading in this issue of THE SUN. Prince of Wales Handicap A classy field will parade for the chief event of the day, and the likely placesetters are well concealed. Well-per - t'ormed ones in Athalone, Jean McElwyn and Harvest Child. The latter ran consistently when last at Epsom, while the former is one of the most improved pacers in tho Dominion. Trampfast, the high-class trotter, will keep the pacers busy, while Silk Thread will be in demand. Free Advice is a consistent mare, while Daphne de Oro is giving signs of regaining her best form. Logan Chief is a possibility, and Author Jinks and Terence Dillon are likely to b© in the picture. Most support will probably be found for Silk Thread and Athalone. St. Clair Trot Tho field of square-gaiters is not of largo dimensions, but quality is well represented, and a good contest is assured. Western Voyage looks the pick of the front-liners, and Bingen Starr should handle the Dunedin track in good style. Cannonball has not shown his best form so far this season, but Sarsaparilla has put up some sound performances, while consistency has marked Lee Tod’s efforts. Trampfast is a good way back, but if started will be with them at the fiinish. A likely pair to be well backed should be Western Voyage and Lee Todd. Renown Handicap There will be a tremendous collection at the post in this heat, and the draw and luck with the dispatch will play a prominent part. On the front is Lady Zita, Needles, Royal Comrade and Rollo, all of whom are useful, while on the next mark is Kreisler, who put up some good efforts on the West Coast. Delightful, Loiterer. Lady Cello, Maurice Dillon, Shady Spot and Logan Hanlon. Further back, Dilworth, Lindberg, Nelson de Oro, Stormbell and Nelson McElwyn will appeal, but they will find it difficult to get through such a field. The elect may be KreislerRoyal Comrade bracket and Dilworth. Flying Handicap There is a marked contrast in the size of this field, but despite its smallness, the race will be interesting. Dillon Gold is off the front, and close to him comes Athalone, Evelyn Locanda. Firpo and Trimmer. Athalone may earn a penalty earlier, and Trimmer should go a merry mile. Dundas Boy is the back marker, but his task is not beyond him. Most of the money may be for Trimmer and Dundas Boy.
