THE SUN
HAWERA, Tuesday
At Hawera a large number of interested spectators attended the racecourse this morning to witness the xvinding-up gallops and exercise xvork of horses to race on Thursday. The course was in perfect order. All fast work xvas done on the plough, which provided fast going. Weather conditions were perfect. W. Pine xx'as first and soon tested the state of the track by galloping Denier five furlongs, which he did very stylishly, running the first txvo in 24, three in 36 4-5, and finished up in 1.2£. The txvo-year-old Ross Ferry, and Ngaxvahine were sprinted three furlongs, finishing nicely in 38. GOOD ONES TRIED Bisox. Vivo and Mendip set off from the mile post, the trio keeping xvell together throughout and running their first txvo furlongs in 27, three in 41, half a mile in 55, and the full mile in 1.49. xvith Bisox a neck in front of Vivo, and Mendip a length further back. Bisox’s effort xx-as satisfactory and the Bisogne mare is rapidly approaching her last winter’s form. Vivo also went xvell, but Mendip is not working as freely as usual. Airway finished a couple of lengths in front of. Annoyer in 3.4. Benzora giving them too much start to get up with them. Benzora ran his half mile in 50. Airway’s performance xvas quite good. Silent and Grand Marnia sprinted two furlongs in 26£. SMART SPRINT An attractive gallop was staged by Calamine and Paitonu over six furlongs. They ran the first half mile in 50. five furlongs in 1.4, and the six in 1.17, with Calamine a neck in front of Paitonu at the finish. Havaring gave Boundary a start from the five and finished half a length in front in 1.3|. Havering went xvell. Glen gar iff (Conway) jumped a round of the schooling hurdles in fine style. Latakia xvorked a round at half pace in good style. Tenacre and Clover Leaf were mates over seven furlongs. Clover Leaf was slow finding her feet, but the pair were
soon together and ran their first five furlongs in 1.5, and the seven in 1.322, with Tenacre in front. COOL MINT’S FINE EFFORT Another splendid work-out was performed when Cool Mint, Richfield, Good Cheer and Teri xvent out together. The last-named xvas slowest to move and never got up to the leader. Cool Mint was in front at the three furlong post, run in 36 1-5, the five being completed in 1.22, with Cool Mint in front of Good Cheer, Richfield a length back and Teri last. Cool Mint’s performance xvas impressive. Bione finished in front of Golden Flower and Animated over five furlongs in 3 .3 3-5. Reremoana finished in front of Fortalice over seven furlongs, running the three in 39. five in 1.5, and the seven in 1.32. Calapat went by himself and ran his half mile in 50. The Hawke’s Bay mare, Epistle, looks nice and was given pace work, a similar task being allotted Ivawhakina and Gold Tree. Flying Binge sprinted three furlongs in 37. MAI DOS PLEASES Maidos (Conway), Pikimai (Fielding), Airtight (Pitcon) and Mandarine (Bell) set out for a round of the big fences. Airtight unshipped Pitcon at the first fence, but continued on riderless and jumped all the fences in great style. Maidos gave the best exhibition of the others, jumping and galloping well, and he looks like keeping the opposition busy in the Hack Steeplechase. Airtight xvas afterwards remounted by Pitcon and put over the brush double, jumping splendidly. Royal Elm (McGovern) xvas also schooled over the big country, jumping safely and looking as if he xvould have gone better in company. H. Connop’s diminutive apprentice, W. Bell, is worthy of mention for the manner in which he rode Mandarine over the fences. Under seven stone, this boy is full of pluck and should go a long way riding the way he does over the obstacles.
MaJahat has been scratched for all engagements.
