WAGES AND CONDITIONS REVIEWED ARBITRATION COURT DECISION Decision in the application of the Cooks and Stewards’ Union for a general review of wages and working conditions for members employed by the Northern Steamship Company, j Ltd., was delivered by the Arbitration Court to-day. The following reclassification of ves- i sels has been decided on: Class A.—Northern Steamship Com- j pany’s Matangi and Rarawa, and any other vessels certified to carry 150 or I more passengers. Class B. —Northern Steamship Com- I pany’s Ngapuhi, Wakatere, Clansman. Taniwha, Waimarie, Waiotahi, Aupouri, Rangitoto, Ngatiawa, Claymore, Rimu and any other vessel certified to carry 40 and not more than 149 passengers. Class C.—Northern Steamship Company’s Apanui. Waipu, Gael, Kawau, Daphne and Hauiti, and any other vessel certified to carry not more than 39 passengers. The classification of vessels will not be affected by temporary permits granted by the Marine Department. Following is the new schedule of | Second stewards, class A, £ls 14s a month; class 3, £l4 14s; forecabin stewards, classes A and 3. £l4 14s: nightwatclimen, classes A and 3. £ls 4s; pantrymen, £l4 14s; saloon waiters and bedroom stewards. £l3 3 4s; assistant stewards, classes A, B, and C. £l3 4s; stewardesses, class A £lO ss, classes B and C £9 ss; chief cook, class A £lB 9s, class 3 £l7 9s, class C £ls 9s: second cooks, classes A and B, £l4 9s; assistant cook, £l2 4s; seullerymen, £lO 9s:' cook-steward, with, assistant, class B £l7 14s, class C £ls 14s. Cadet assistants to cooks and stewards are to receive: Under 17 years, £8 2s 6d; 17 years to 19 years, £9 12s 6d; 19 years to 21 years, £lO 12s 6d; thereafter, the minimum rate. Overtime at the rate of 2s 6d an hour for ratings with wages of £ls a month or more, and 2s 3d an hour for others is fixed. Cadets will receive Is 2d an hour. The minimum payment for overtime shall be a quarter of an hour where the time worked is 15 minutes or under, and half an hour where the time worked is over 15 minutes and under 31 minutes, after which actual time shall be paid. In an application by the Cooks’* and Stewards’ Union for an interpretation as to whether it was permissible for the Northern Steamship Co. to employ on the s.s. Waipu, a “C” class vessel, a “cook-steward with assistant,” and a cadet assistant at the rates set out in the classification without employing any other workers under the classification, or must the cadet assistant in this case be paid the award rate for an assistant cook or an assistant steward, the Court also delivered a decision, stating that the cook-steward must be provided with an assistant. out the award did not specify whether the assistant was to be an adult or a cadet.
