FLAMES SWEEP CITY
THOUSANDS HOMELESS AT HANGCHOW DAMAGE OF £700,000 (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) SHANGHAI, Monday. A most serious fire occurred yesterday at Hangchow, 80 miles from Shanghai. It resulted in the complete destruction of more than 500 buildings. The damage is estimated at £700.000. Thousands of people are homeless. Several of the most important buildings in the town were destroyed, including schools, a hospital, temples, a number of ancient landmarks, pagodas and the former Manchu Palace. Thousands of Chinese stampeded and there were numerous casualties in consequence. The total number killed and burned is uncertain at present.
