MOTOR-CYCLE SPEEDWAY
CONSTRUCTION IN AUCKLAND RACING ON DIRT TRACK A stadium seating 15,000 people is part of the proposals for the early construction of a motor-cycle dirt track speedway in Auckland. It is expected that the new sports area will be ready fo.r opening in November in conjunction with similar tracks in Dunedin, Christchurch and Invercargill. A company with a proposed capital of £IO,OOO will undertake the new Auckland venture.
The success of dirt track racing in Wellington has been largely responsible for its extension on a Dominionwide scale. The Auckland project has no connection with the Mangere motor speedway or the cinder track which is being put down at Western Springs. Almost entirely evening programmes will be held.
A property has already been secured close to the city, and plans have been made for the construction of the speedway after consultation with expert dirt track riders. It is expected that with five stadiums in operation next season, the pick of New Zealand riders will be opposed by overseas competitors, who will be able to spend two months in New Zealand without competing more than twice in one city.
