At the first fence in the Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree, Liverpool, on March 22. Over 300,000 people saw the race, which was won by the big outsider, Mrs. Gemmell’s Gregalach, ridden by R. Eiverett, from the favourite, Easter Hero. There were 66 starters —a record number- 40 of whom fell at the first round. Only seven completed the course.
