LARGE LAND CLAIM

COURT HEARING ENDS Press Association NAPIER, Monday. The hearing lias concluded in the Native Land Court in Hastings ot claims by natives concerning the Aorangi block. Nine years ago a Royal Commission decided that natives of Central Hawke’s Bay had been wrongly dispossessed of an area of 7,200 acres, sold in the ’sixties by the Crown to Mr. Sydney Johnstone. A special statute gave power to the Native Land Court to take evidence and recommend what would be adequate compensation for a period of approximately 65 years. The Maoris submitted a claim for £240,000, which the Crown representative before the Court opposed. The Court reserved its decision.
