First of Winter Meetings Successful
SPORT AT MARTON
THE winter racing season was most successfully launched at Mar ton by the Marton Jockey Club on Saturday, the number of starters, both on the flat and over the obstacles, being such as to indicate that there will be plenty of material for the winter Turf campaign.
SATURDAY at Marton was a glorious day, more typical of early autumn than of early winter, and naturally the attendance at this popular fixture was large. Hitherto the Mai ton Jockey Club has held two-day meetings in ~ the spring and midsummei, but a new departure this season was a oneday meeting in the spring, tin. remaining of y being eel upmt for ias\ Saturday. It can bo said Ilia-, this alteration was a move in the right direction, for Saturday’s fixture was a splendid success, both from the viewpoints of racing and finance. The meeting was a well-conducted aifair, *ne executive leaving no stone unturned to make it a success. Its efforts were well rewarded, for the attendance was large for an off-day (there was no local half -holiday). The course was in excelleir order. Good Racing Plenty of keen racing was witnessed, Trainer F Tilley captured a double with Ruanui and Limited: and Taranto won two hack races. Red Bank defeated tire Great Northern candidate. Red Fuchsia, in the Open Hurdles, but the lalter registered a tine performance. Matu .won the Marton Steeplerb'i.st from Puwhere and Star of the Fust, five only out of the 13 completing the course, seven horses falling and one running off. The meeting was splendidly managed, all the races being got off practically to time. The totalisator handled £15,441, compared with £ 13,480 on the second day of the spring meeting last season, in place of which Saturday’s winter fixture was staged. The gate takings also showed an incrois*3. Open Hurdles The defection of Home Made and IviForook from the opening event left a held of half a dozen and there was plenty of money for Nucleus £390, Red Bank £3lB, and Red Fuchsia £250 Mandarine went out early to make the pace and led past the stands from Red Bank. Red Fuchsia, Koauau, Nucleus and Kilburn. Mandarine here lost his position—he was jumping badly—but he was in charge at the five, only for Red Fuchsia to jump his way to the front and lead across the top and into the straight from Red Bank, Kilburn, Mandarine and Nucleus. Red Bank was first over the last fence and although Red Fuchsia challenged hotly the former won by half a length. Five lengths back was Kilburn, with Mandarine (who gave a very erratic exhibition of fencing) fourth, and Nucleus next. Red Fuchsia ran a great race under his big weight, but Nucleus was disappointing She was ridden by L. G. Morris, who is making his reappearance over the sticks. Dash Hack.—First Division Inflame £391, Naselle £324 and Bank Note £302 were the best backed in the first division of the Dash Hack Handicap, but the winner turned up in Wiggins’s mount Taranto £154. Bank Note made play early from Inflame, Taranto, Whit© Ringlet, Good Cheer and Marenga, but at the end of a furlong Inflame had hit the front and showed the way into the straight from Taranto, Bank Note, Marenga, Good Cheer, Vinella and Naselle. Once in line Taranto came through to win by a length and a-half from Inflame, with Bank Note half a length away. Next were Good Cheer, Vinella, Naselle and Whit© Ringlet. The winner paid quite a good price and is a very likely sort, having plenty of size and pace. Dash .Hack —Second Division There was a turn up in the second division of the Dash Hack Handicap, for which Joy Germ £462 and Callapat were fancied, with Some Acre at a wonderful price, carrying £123 and paying just short of double figures. At the start Marenga, Hopwood, The Jack Jumper were slow away, Wyeford, Joy Germ, Latakia, Plane, Some Acre and Callapat being the order out of the tapes, inside a furlong Joy Germ had taken up the running from Wyeford, Some Acre, Hopwood, Callapat and Latakia, and into the straight the favourite still had charge from Some Acre, Callapat and Hopwood. In a good finish Some Acre beat Joy Germ by a head, with two lengths back to Hopwood. Fourth was Callapat, then coming Latakia, Wyeford, Plane and The Jack Jumper. Marton Steeplechase Maunga and Mandarine were taken out of the Marton Steeples, 13 starting. the winner turning up in the little-fancied Matu, who paid double figures. The favourites were Star of the East (£370) and Mountain C.rag (£290), with Puwhero carrying £169 and Matu £ll3. No less than seven fell, the race being a continuous chapter of accidents. Frisco Jack made the early running from Ban juke. Star of the East. Mountain Crag.
Trouble, Brigadier Bill, Puwhero. Vexatious, and Son o’ Mine, the first fence bringing down Marcellous and the second Brigadier Bill, while Son o’ Mine fell at the back and Trouble at the top of the straight the secand time. The order over the stand double the second time was Frisco Jack (who fell at the first of this double). Star of the East, Mountain Crag, Puwhero, Vexatious. Hollycombe, Braeman and Matu, this lot being in very close order. Hollycombe fell at the back and then Puwhero. Mountain Crag drew out from Star of the East, Vexatious and Braeman. the first pair g>*ng away, bu* Mountain Crag fell at the half-mile and Vexatious ran off at the next fence. Puwhero was first over the last obstacle, but Matu caught him and won by eight lengths. Star of the East, who jumped badly, was a similar distance away third, with Braeman right up fourth and Banjuke the only other to complete the course. Hollycombe, who was travelling fairly well when he fell six furlongs from home, broke a leg and was destroyed. Winter Hack There was a rare good finish in the
Winter Hack Handicap, for which Disrank .£309 and Skyrider £-37 were besi backed, Royal Acre being entrusted with £l7B. Hard Cold was left at the start., Mystum leading out of the straight from Skyrider, Royal Acre, Metellus, Warfille, Disrank and Briar Root, with Gasnapper early tailing off. Entering the back stretch Skyrider took up the running and led across the top and into the straight from Mystum. Roj-al Acre, Metellus. Briar Root and Shrewd In a fine finish Royal Acre and Skyrider dead-lieated, with Shrewd a head away. Next were Metellus, Briar Root, Mystum, Disrank, Aurora Borealis and Warfille. Crofton Handicap Shining Armour and Briar Root were taken of the Crofton Handicap, leaving nine runners. Ruanui £549 and Papatu £4OB carried the most money, and they retained the dividends, but only after i <ood race. Starboard Bight tried to win all the way, lending past the standi and out. of the straight from Royal Damon, Blimp. Borsalene, Ruanui. Manly. Nukumai and Imperial Spark. with Papatu last. Entering the back stretch Starboard Right held an ad-
vantage of over half a dozen lengths, his nearest attendants being Royal Damon, Blimp, Ruanui, Nukumai and Papatu. Along the back the leader had increased his advantage to eight lengths, but the field closed on him crossing the top, and he just led into the home stretch, with Royal Damon, Manly, Blimp, Ruanui and Borsalene on his heels, and Imperial Spark well back. Ruanui shot through to the lead inside the distance, and went on to win a fine race by three parts of a length from Papatu, with Imperial Spark half a length away third, the last two horses finishing fast from the back. Blimp was fourth, just in front of Borsalene, with Royal Damon, Starboard Light and Manly next, Nukumai being several lengths away last. Flying Handicap Moa Bird £4lB, was a £5 better favourite than Limited in the Flying Handicap, with good money for the chances of Keddar £3Bl. A great start saw the field race in line for the best part of a furlong before Limited’s nose began to show out from Broad Acre, Dobbin, Vast Acre, Keddar, First Acre and Moa Bird. Approaching the half-mile Limited was clear of Dobbin, Broad Acre, Keddar, Whenuanui and Moa Bird. Limited was nearly three lengths in front at the home turn, Dobbin, Broad Acre, Keddar, Vast Acre and Moa Bird following, with not a great deal between the bunch chasing the leader. At the distance Limited was still well clear, and with the aid of the whip maintained his advantage to win by just over a length from Keddar, with two lengths back to Broad Acre, who was just ahead of Dobbin, with Moa Bird, Whenuanui, Vast Acre and First Acre next over the line. Farewell Hack There were 13 runners in the concluding event, Taranto, an earlier winner, being penalised 71b. The favourites were Taranto £383, with money also for Warflame £373 and Australis £365. White Ringlet led out from Australis. Vinella and Grattan, but Taranto soon took up the running and led across the top and into the straight clear of Australis, Warflame, Vinella, White Ringlet, Ali Baba and The Jack Jumper. A great finish saw Australis apparently catch the tiring Taranto and beat him by a neck, but the judge gave it to Taranto, with Australis second and Warflame half a length away third. Vinella was fourth and Grattan and White Ringlet close up. Results are as follow: Open Hurdles, of £175; about 1J miles. —2 Red Bank. 9.7, Robinson, 1: 3 Red Fuchsia, 12.2, A.
