DAMAGED MISSION SHIP
SOUTHERN CROSS MAKING FOR AUCKLAND
BISHOP MOLYNEUX ABOARD The Melanesian Mission steamer Southern Cross, which left Auckland last Tuesday week for the Solomon Islands, and which became disabled on reaching Norfolk Island, has wirelessed that she left the island sunset last evening to be repaired at Auckland. little vessel broke her rudder trunk and it was at first thought she would have to be towed back to this port. Arrangements were made accordingly, but Captain Burgess sent a radio message that he had been able to make temporary repairs by the construction of a jury rudder, and that the assistance of a tug from Auckland was not necessary.
Among the 12 passengers was Bishop F. M. Molyneux, who was returning to his island diocese. With the exception of the bishop all the passengers were landed at Norfolk, and will await the return of the ship. Bishop Molyneux is coming back to Auckland with the Southern Cross. Captain Burgess wirelessed last evening that the ship was making seven knots and the weather was good. It is believed the repairs can be completed in about 48 hours.
