POST OFFICE PROFITS
POSITION IN BRITAIN
The Postmaster-General. Sir William Mitehell-Thomson, speaking at Croydon recently, said that from the national accounts they could not get a true commercial picture of the post oflice.
The commercial surplus of the post office, not its profits, during the five years 1920-24. inclusive, was £615.929. but for the four years 1925-28, coupled with a conservatively estimated result for 1929, the total was £33,955.422.
The surplus on the telephone account last year was £107,000, but the figure which would represent what would be available for dividend were the post office a private concern was £4,070,000, subject, however, to the taxation which an ordinary business would have to pay on ascertained profits.
