Dramatic Critic Gives His Opinion of Maurice Moscovitch

The London dramatic critic, Hannen Swatter, tvrites the following short biography of Maurice Moscovitch, who has played various pieces from Shakespeare to Edgar Wallace, in New Zealand: A Russian-Jewish actor, polished but not Polish, who has played immoderately in five different bad languages. He mixed them up so much in “Angelo,” Drury Lane’s worst fiasco, that, at the end, a man said to me: “Surely this is Drury Lane’s Waterloo.'’ “No,” I replied, “it’s only its retreat from Moscovitch.” Even after that, Moscovitch returned to England and revived “The Great Lover,” which, for the second time in succession, a coal strike killed. Jews admired his Shylock. I would rather have given him a pound of flesh. Then, I am tired of Bacon.

“Rio Rita,” after a run of nearly five months at the Melbourne Princess, has gone to Perth. To celebrate her birthday—and her 15th year on the stage—Gladys Moncrieff gave the company a supper party recently. Phyllis du Barry is the latest addition to “Rio Rita,” and Jeanette Gilmore is having a fortnight’s holiday.
