Attempt to Wreck Wellington Express
SLEEPER ON LINE PORTER STOPS TRAIN Press Association PALMERSTON N„ To-day. An attempt was made last night to derail the train from Wellington known as the Fields Express, by placing fish-plates and a sleeper across the rails near Longburn. The sleeper was placed slantwise between the rails with the fish-plates at either end to ride the wheels off the metals, but a traffic inspector, after visiting the scene, considers the obstruction could not possibly effect a derailment. Prior to the time the train was due at Longburn, a porter saw two men on the permanent way. Considering they were in danger, he went to warn them. He found the men had left and then discovered the sleeper and the fish-plates on the line. The train was then only a short distance away, but the driver was signalled to and the train stopped after a slight impact with the obstruction.
