MR. JINKS
FIRST CLASSIC WINNER FOR THE TETRACH’S OWNER j CRAGADOUR AND GAY DAY PLACED (United PA.—By Telegraph — Copyright) LONDON, Wednesday. The Newmarket first spring meeting, opened yesterday, was continued today, when the first of the seasons big three-year-old classics, the Two Thousand Guineas, for colts and fillies, was decided. The One Thousand Guineas, for three-year-old fillies only, is to be run on Friday. The following is the result of the TWO THOUSAND GUINEAS STAKES, A sweepstake of £IOO each, half forfeit if declared by the Tuesday m the week before running, or £5 the. only forfeit if declared by the first Tuesday in July, 1925; with 2,00 u guineas added; colts 9.0, fillies 8.9; second £6OO. third £ 300. Run over the Rowley .Mile (straight) course Closed with 256 entries. z MR. JINKS (Major Dermot McCalmont), gr c, by Tetratema— False Piety CRAGADOUR (Lord Astor). b c, by Craig-an-Eran—Pompadour 2 GAY DAY (Sir Victor Sassoon), b c, by Gay Crusader—Silver Tag r» There were 22 runners. Wo.n by h head, with a length and a half separating second and third. Mr. Jinks, a roan colt by Tetratema out of False Piety, is the property of Major D. McCalmont (who raced the famous “rocking horse,” The Tetrarcli), and is trained by A tty Pcrsse. His record for the past season as a two-year-old was remarkably consistent, as he won four of his six races,, and was second in each of the other two. Nor did cither of these defeats ho sustained disgrace him, for. on the occasion of the first, he was attempting the hopeless task of conceding 71b to Tiffin; and Reflector, who beat him three parts of a length in the second, is quite in the first class when in the humour to do his best. Mr. Jinks made an excellent start by easily winning the New Stakes at Ascot, though the 17 behind him were only moderate. He turned the tables on Reflector in tho July Stakes, but it was only by a bead that he managed to beat Torbuie free. 101 b) in the Lavant Stakes at Goodwood. Reflector, being on his best behaviour, beat him in the Buckenham Stakes, but he wound up with an easy victory in the Prendegast Stakes. In the Free Handicap, Mr. Jinks was given 9st Gib, only lib below the top weight. Tiffin, without allowing for sex. The latter is the favourite for the fillies’ race, the One Thousand Guineas, run on Friday. Major McCalmont also won the Two Thousand Guineas in 1920 with Tetratema (by The Tetrarch), sire of Mr. Jinks, and it is perhaps a coincidence that in the following year Lord Astor won this classic with Craig-an-Eran (sire of Cragadour, second yesterday to Mr. Jinks). Lord Astor, by the way. has a wonderful record of seconds and thirds in the great classic, but remarkably few winners. Major McCalmont has yet to win the Derby, but English critics have preferred to regard Mr. Jinks as a sprinter only, and certainly not up to the Derby mile and a-half. Sir Victor Sassoon apparently has a chance -of winning the Derby with Cragadour. Two years ago he owned Hot Night, runner-up to Call Boy in the famous Epsom race.
