What Nelson Form Revealed
POINTERS FOR MARLBOROUGH (Special to THE SUXJ WELLINGTON. Wednesday. Although the Nelson meeting fell at the end of the autumn season and has no great bearing on coming events in general, form at the fixture has a very particular application to the Marlborough gathering, which opens this week. Most of the horses which will figure at Waterlea on Friday and Saturday were seen in action at Nelson, so tho form of some of the runners will be of interest. Among tho maiden performers seen at Nelson tho most promising was Make Up. a member of Mr. J. J. Corry’s string. Make Up is by Surveyor from Roseneur. A little later on Mr. Corry may have others of the Surveyor family running in his colours. Black Mint ran a second and a third at Nelson, and will be in better trim at Marlborough. Had be not been taken to the front a long way from home he might have won the Nelson Cup, but he was squarely beaten on the second day over a slightly shorter distance. Black Mint is a hors© that never does his best unless a course is soft. Me is one of the good chances in the Waterlea Cup. Was a Failure The failure of the handicap horses at Nelson was Ramoses. He could not manage to gallop in the bad ground, and ill any case there is a suspicion that he was slightly off colour at the time. Rabbi is one of the most improved three-year-olds about. He won the Nelson Cup in excellent style, and was most unlucky to be beaten in the Redwood Memorial on the second day. Had he not struck serious trouble going out of the straight just after the start he would have won. He nearly fell when the trouble occurred and then was beaten a head in a hard finish. That effort might have taken a good deal out of him, but if he has freshened up in the meantime he deserves to be i one of the favourites for the Waterlea Cup on Friday. Kilbronsyth showed pace in his races but did not stay on, and it seemed that the big fellow would be the better for some racing. Consistent and unlucky may be said to describe the performances of Smithereens at Nelson. He stands up to hard racing well and might win before being taken back to Reefton. Kiriana Unlucky The connections of Kiriana were most unfortunate not to win a stake at Nelson, but they should get their expenses at Marlborough. Kiriana raced both days at last week’s fixture for a second and a third. On the second day he was anything from a dozen to twenty lengths behind the leaders five furlongs from home and then he finished up being beaten a very short head for first place. This was one of the best hack performances seen for some time in this area and it should 1 be a very little while before Kiriana makes amends for that narrow defeat. Certainly one cannot go past him at Marlborough after his running at Nelson in the same class.
Ronaki’s Nelson successes will mean that he will have more weight to carry at Blenheim, but as he was in need of racing he should again run good races. Last Crust ran very badly at Nelson. He showed speed, but finished up his work in poor style, a style that far from agrees with his Masterton form. Maui should pay his way at Blenheim. His win on the second day at Nelson was one of the easiest of the meeting. He had a great deal in hand. Arrow Boy was beaten by the long straight at Nelson and it would not be surprising were he to be harder to beat on the Marlborough course. Dermod was reckoned to be unlucky on the second das' at Nelson and he ill carry the confidence of his party when he races at Blenheim. Modern has not been long in training, and though she sometimes has raced well when fresh it should not be overlooked that she showed no form last week.
R irst Acre had his first race for many months on the second dav of the Nelson meeting. Tie is in forward condition and should be a good sprinter in the winter, when he might be taken to Australia.
