£15,000 SUBSIDY

PANMURE-HOWICK RD. CONCRETE PAVING A concrete road, or nothing at all! This ultimatum was presented by the Manukau County Council recently to the Alain Highways Board, in respect of approximately five miles of the Panmure-Howick road from Tamaki bridge to Ho wick township. The Highways Board wanted to construct the section in bitumen penetration, but has now capitulated to Alanukau’s request. Separate traffic tallies taken by the council’s staff and the Public Works Department, both of which confirmed the fact that an enormous volume of heavy traffic and outside vehicles traverse this route daily, and particularly during weekends, settled the issue. This section is to be constructed in concrete, at a cost of approximately £20.000. The work will be subsidised by the Alain Highways Board to the extent of £15,000 on a £3 for £1 basis. This portion of the road is now of macadam formation, coated with shingle. The width of the concrete paving is not yet settled, estimates not having yet been framed by the county engineer. When the work is completed, Howick and the city will be linked by a concrete highway with the exception of a small section of bitumen at Ellerslie. The council now has the framing of loan proposals to raise the county’s share of the money, in hand, and these will be submitted to the Local Government Loans Board for approval alter adoption by the council.
