SELFISH OBSERVANCE
ANZAC CEREMONIES TOO DRAWN-OUT R.S.A. SUGGESTIONS That the Anzac Day ceremonies should be less drawn-out, and that the children should be addressed in the schools on the morning of the day instand of the afternoon before were two suggestions made by Lieut.-Colonel T. H. Dawson, retiring president of the Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association, at its annual meeting last evening. U"E reminded the meeting of the recent utterances of his Excellency the Governor-General, > Sir Charles Fergusson, on the subject, and said that many people were beginning to : regard the present observance of Anzac Day as rather a selfish one. In addition to the hours of strain for those who took official part there was the fact that the wives and children of returned men taking part in the ceremonies saw' little of their husbands and fathers during the day. Some change was needed to allow the children particularly to have a greater interest in the day, with a less drawn-out ceremony. The meeting decided that a subcommittee should consider the question of observance and the possibility of school children being addressed on Anzac morning.
