English Chocolates to be Made in N.Z.

NEW INDUSTRIES EFFECT OF HIGH TARIFF Two well-known brands of English chocolate—Cadbury’s anci* Fry’s—are to be manufactured in New Zealand. Experts will arrive in the Dominion shortly and an up-to-date plant is to be erected at some centre which has j yet to be chosen. These statements were made this morning by Mr. G. Sara, New Zealand | manager for Cadbury’s, chocolate j manufacturers, Birmingham, who re-< turned this morning by the Tamaroa ! from England. The reason for the new development 1 is the high tariff imposed on imported chocolate by the New Zealand Government. Cadbury’s and Fry’s chocolates

cost twice as much in the Dominion as they do in England. New Zealand will lose the revenue from this commodity, but will get the benefit of manufacture here. Mr. Sara said that he was agreeably surprised by what he saw in England. With the exception of coal and cotton, trade was improving. The manufacturers had wakened to trade. possibilities. He thought that the unemployment cry was overdone. After deducting those who would not and could not work the percentage of ablebodied persons was not large. When he left England the topic of the day was how the “flapper” vote would affect the elections, hut it xvas impossible to say whether the Conservatives or Labour would be returned. Mr. Sara will return to Wellington this evening.
