AN APPEAL FOR CIVIC RIGHTEOUSNESS

The Executive of the Council of Christian Congregations, including representatives of the Church of England, the Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, Congregational Churches and other Christian bodies, is of the opinion that the citizens of Auckland need to be warned against what appears to be a determined effort by certain interesteparties to dominate the Auckland Cit;, Council. It is significant that the names of all those councillors who have been ! members of the Parks’ Committee, and who, in that capacity, have opposed the | granting of foreshore rights to Dixiej land, Ltd., have been excluded from the ! "ticket” put forward by the so-called Progressive Citizens’ Committee. The candidates concerned are Miss A. H. G. Basten, Mr. J. Donald, Mr. J. B. Paterson, and Mr. E. J. Phelan. Mr. G. Knight, who was also a member of the Parks Committee, and was associated with the others in opposing the efforts of Dixieland, Ltd., is also excluded from the “ticket” of the Progressive Citizens’ Committee in his candidature for the Hospital Board. The Executive of the Council of Christian Congregations appeals to the Citizens of Auckland to prevent the candidates mentioned from being victimised: and, by their support of them at the polls, to show that they object strongly to tactics of this sort. The Executive is not making personal | recommendations at this election with regard to other candidates, among whom are many men and women of undoubted integrity. The Executive urges Electors not to be guided by any “ticket,” but to vote only for those who can be trusted to serve the highest interests of righteousness in the City of Auckland. The Council of Christian Congregations is determined to stand by candidates for public office who are prepared to uphold the best British traditions of purity of civic and national life. (Sgd.) W.
