MAYOR’S EXPLANATION

SIR EDWIN MITCHELSON’S SUPPORT LOST BY MISINFORMATION Mr. G. Baildon explained to his audience at the Leys Institute, Ponsonby, last evening, why he had not been nominated by Sir Edwin Mitchelson, as in past campaigns. “There is quite a lot in that,” he replied in answer to a question. “1 have not said anything about It before, but I have been asked the same thing in the street. Sir Edwin Mitchelson has not dropped me.” Mr. Baildon recalled a conversation he had had with Sir Edwin in the Town Hall. “Sir Edwin then told me that Mr. Vaile had said that I had told him that I was not going to stand for re-election. In consequence, Sir Edwin was placed in an awkward position,” he continued. “I never said anything of the sort to Mr. Vaile. The only time.l have spoken to him concerning the mayoralty was about last September, when Mr. Vaile asked if I was standing again. I said then that the election was a long way off, and that it was too early to sav anything. Mr. Vaile then asked if I would support his candidature in the event of my not standing again. I refused" telling him that I might wish to give my support to a member of the council.” Mr. Baildon added that Sir Edwin Mitchelsou had given liim full permission to make use of their conversation.
