KING COUNTRY JOTTINGS In the absence owing to ill-health of Mrs. Barker, who forwarded an apology, Mrs. Coates presided over the last meeting for this year of the Taumarunui district branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mrs. Barker, the retiring president, wrote expressing thanks for the happy co-operation of the committee during the year and intimating that she would not be able to again offer herself for the presidential position. It was resolved to send Mrs. Barker a letter of thanks for the great work she had done for the branch, and regret at the necessity for her retirement. In connection with the resignation of the Dominion president, Mrs. W. A. Poison, it was resolved to send a letter expressing the branch's appreciation of the work she had done for the Women’s Division and for the local centre. It was resolved to invite Mrs. Poison (Wanganui) and Mrs. Jackson (Masterton) to attend the annual meeting to be held on May 11. With the object of replacing school funds lost in the recent fire a dance ! was held in the Tokirima Mall, proj ceeds going to the local school. The j surrounding settlers and townspeople i showed their sympathy by being present in considerable numbers, and the j financial results went a long way to j making good the deficit. Mrs. Lynskev gave a delightful bridge party recently at her residence. Taumarunui. many guests spending a most enjoyable evening. Mrs. Joyes won the prize for the highest score, and Mrs. Beeche won the hidden number prize. At the annual meeting of the Raurimu Basketball Club the following officers were elected: President. Mrs. H. B. Hill; vice-president, Mrs. A. Stewart: captain, Miss Zachariah: vicecaptain. Miss Hill: secretary. Miss Murray: treasurer, Miss L.. Treanor. A number of new members have already joined this year.
MOTHERS AND WIVES WOMEN’S RESERVE REUNION To make arrangements for the annual reunion of mothers, wives and widows of soldiers and sailors who fought in the Great War, the Women's National Reserve held a meeting last week. It was decided to hold the reunion on Thursday, when Mrs. Swabey, wife of Commodore Swabey, will address the meeting. The secretary reported that the re- j serve had contributed cakes to the j Community Sunshine Club for the j afternoon tea served at Luna Park during its carnival week. The members ! of the reserve have undertaken to help with the Plunket Lay collection on May 31 - GARDEN PARTY FETE AT TAKAPUNA The Takapuna brajicli of the W omen’s Christian Temperance Union held a garden party in the grounds of Miss Jackson, in East Lake Road, Takapuna, on Saturday afternoon. In the absence of Mrs. Morgan Richards the fete was opened by Mrs. Teasdale. The stalls were arranged around the gardens and lawns, and were in charge of the following: Flowers and bulbs, Mrs. Huddleston; produce, Mrs. Lewins and helpers; cakes, Mrs. Winstone and Mrs. Hales; afternoon tea, Mrs. Colvan, Mrs. Morgan and helpers. The money which was collected during the afternoon has been given to the headquarters. fund.
FAREWELL AND PRESENTATION St. John’s Hall, Ohakune, was the scene of great festivity on Friday evening last, the occasion being a send-off, organised by the staff of the local post office, to Mr. and Mrs. L. G. North. There was an attendance of about 60 friends, at the invitation of the Post and Telegraph staff, and a most enjoyable evening was spent with musical items, speeches, and dancing. Items were rendered as follow: Miss Y. Clemett, pianoforte solo; Miss Lightband, solo; Mrs. Blacklock, solo: Mr. Blennerhassett ,solo; Mr. F. Pearce, solo; Mr. M. Lewis, of Auckland, gave a few humorous stories. The music for dancing was played by Miss P. Foster, Miss 1). Wood, and Mrs. A. Larsen, and was greatly appreciated by all. During the supper interval Mr. O. El. List, on behalf of the Post and Telegraph staff, said that the evening had been organised to wish the departing guests farewel. Mr. North had been connected with the local post office for over 12 years. They were losing a most valuable official, and they were sorry to lose him. He deserved the transfer, and it would be a steppingstone to higher things. He always played the game, and they felt they could not let him go without showing a little of their appreciation. Hb called upon the guests of honour to accept as a memento of the local staff an excellent electric kettle. Mr. North, who was received with acclamation, thanked everybody for the enjoyable evening, and the expressions of goodwil. He was sorry to be leaving so many sterling friends. CROQUET “AT HOME” A large number of the members of the Papatoetoe Croquet Club attended the final “At Home” held on the club's lawns on Saturday to celebrate the closing day of the season. The lawns were in splendid condition. A series of progressive croquet games v-as played, and aftei' some keen and very interesting contests, the winners were as follow:—Mrs. W. J. Nicholson and Mrs. T. R. Smytheman tied in the A grade: Mrs. F. ~E. Carr won the B grade, with Mrs. Weston runner-up; Mrs. G. Foster and Mrs. R. Smith were awarded consolation prizes, and Mrs. J. Bryant won the hidden number competition.
MOTHER’S CLUB SOCIAL Under the auspices of the Mothers’ Club, a very pleasant social eveningwas spent in the Y.W.C.A. Hall on Saturday. The main feature of the programme was a display by the women members of the Gymnasium Club. Other items were a pianoforte duet Mrs. Morris and Miss -Rankin: songs by Misses Blumhardt and Havill and Mr. J. Taylor, song and dance by Mavis Kilev and elocutionary items by Mrs. Pankhurst and Mr. Blake. Mrs. Hankins, the president, acted as hostess and thanked the performers j for their items. Road, entertained over fifty guests in the Gas Company’s Social Hall, Otahuhu, on Saturday evening, to celebrate the coming-of-age of their son George. A canopy of multi-coloured streamers, and sprigs of autumn-col-oured leaves, made effective decoration. The tables were arranged with ■bowls of autumn-coloured chrysanthemums. DANCE AT DRURY PUKEKOHE. Saturday. The first annual ball held by the Manukau Rugby Sub-Union was held in the Drury Hall on Friday evening, there being an attendance of about 100 couples. The hall was decorated with streamers of amber and black, the sub-union’s colours. The president. Captain W. J\ Brooks, presented representative caps to the senior team and the Foote Shield to the junior team, the winner of the competition. Dance music was provided by Holmes’s orchestra. The studio looked charming with bowls of gold and white chrysanthemums mingled with ferns. After a short musical programme by students games and competitions were indulged in.
