ACTS ROLE FROM HIS OWN PAST Shayle Gardner, stage star, as Lord Bellemont in Hex Ingram's production ot Cosmo Hamilton's "The Three Passions,” stokes a huge furnace in a factory single-handed owing to a strike of workmen at his shipyard. the pride of his heart. Many people have remarked on the workmanlike way Gardner handles the shovel, but it will surprise them to learn that owing to the length of the sequence and the necessity of retakes he actually hurled well over a ton of coal through the furnace doors. Luckilv the task was not so heavy to him as it would be to most screen players. In his youth the husky New Zealander worked his way round the world ill all kinds of tramp steamers, and his own meals depended on his efficiency in feeding the fires in the engine room. Now that he is above that necessity, Gardner stokes for fun whenever he is aboard ship, putting in two days at the furnaces, "Just to keep tit,” he says.^
