Waikato Club Has Good Meeting

LUCY ROSE’S TWO EFFORTS , SPRINT TO LADY QUEX L Backers at Te Rapa yesterday did > not have matters all their own way, for dividends throughout were very L solid. With so many big prices on * Saturday it was surprising to find the ' totalisator investments keeping up so ■ well, there being a £2,220 10s increase on the two days. Yesterday the 1 machine handled £26,943* LOs, against * £21,979 10s on the second day of the » last autumn meeting, when the day * was wet and stormy. For the two 5 days the sum registered was £55,475 > 10s, compared with £56,255. On the whole the fixture can be J said to have been most successful, and * the Waikato Racing Club should be 5 able to show a satisfactory balance sheet as a result. The racing on the j two days was of the best, and prob- - ably, from the point of view . of stir- , ring finishes, the outstanding meeting , of the season. A Lone Favourite , Lucy Rose won the principal event > yesterday, and she was the only fav--1 ourite to win at the meeting. The ’ filly came out again in the sprint ' event three races later, but the best \ she could do was a good third. [ The course was a bit on the soft , side, and the turf was cut up consid- , erably by the time the last race was run. Nevertheless, in view of the ■ very heavy rain experienced during the past week, the course stood up 1 to it really well. Big fields in all - events were again seen out. The conduct of the meeting was in ' the right hands, everything passing off * without a hitch. In the Rangiriri [ High-Weight, the winner, Hipo, bored in on Modest Boy (second), but the [ trouble did not appear to affect the - result, so the stewards, after inquiry, took no action. Raglan Hurdles ’ Kawini, £3lB, Ripon Abbey, £251, [ Star Comet, £l9O, and Cybele, £ISB, , were the best backed for the Raglan i Hurdles, three of the elect fighting out . the issue. Ripon Abbey and Ned Kelly went to the front, and led past ’ the stand from King- Fame, Cybele, l Uralla, Boomerday, Glena Bay, Star , Comet, Kawini, and Gold Rep. The , hurdle at the six furlong post brought ; about the downfall of Spancil Hill, Pouri having to be checked here. Glena Bay moved up to a good posi- ■ I tion, and crossing the top was up with ■ | Ripon Abbey, while Boomerday, Cybele, Kawini, and Star Comet were lying : handy. When the straight was reached there was little between Glena Bay, Cybele, and Boomerday, while Kawini and Star Comet were close up. Cybele shot to the front, and, despite a desperate challenge from the favourite, hung on to score by a short neck, with Star Comet two and a-half lengths away third. Then came Uralla, 1 Glena Bay, Boomerday, Odin, Pouri, and Ripon Abbey. Ohinewai Maiden Look Out was a slightly better favourite in the Ohinewai Maiden Handi- ’ cap than Parfait Amour, the respective amounts on the machine being £482 and £452. The ultimate winner. Liona, was entrusted with £ll9, while Little Toy. who finished second, carried £ 65. A scratchy start saw several left, including Parfait Amour, Pompeius and Dainty Manners, Townsman leading out from Look Out, Liona, Joy Girl, Rangikaha and Princess Snow. There was practic- [ ally no alteration in the • order until approaching the straight, where Princess Snow took charge to lead round the turn from Tuku and Look Out. who were together, closely followed by Parfait Amour, Kingsland and Newboy. Inside the distance Parfait Amour looked the winner, but stopped badly, and Liona and Little Toy appeared from the back to fight out a stirring finish, the former getting a narrow j verdict. Pompeius, who was badly placed after losing ground at the start, came with a late run into third place. Princess Snow was fourth, followed by Parfait Amour, Grand Arch and Soamai. Eureka Handicap There was solid backing for Motere in the Eureka I-landicap, the Te Awamutu representative being entrusted with £633, having a good call over the second favourite, Fraser, who carried £353. Valstreet dwelt a bit at the start, and when they had settled down Pellette was making play from Crirnestor, Royal Finance, Awamutu. Rose Lupin, Snow Plane and Bennie, and as they raced across the top Royal Finance joined issue with Pellette, this pair being chased by Currajong, Crimestor and Rose Lupin. This was the order at the home turn, with the favourite last. Royal Finance fought out every inch of the big straight, but Flying Prince caught her in the last 30 yards, gaining a neck decision. Currajong was the same distance away in third place, and after this two came Fraser, Bennie. Trig, Valstreet, Gemlight and Motere. The favourite could not handle the soft ground. Te Rapa Handicap After getting badly away, Lucy I Rose (favourite with £572) was still | good enough to win, and thus placed j most backers on splendid terms with ! themselves. Mervette was second I choice with £553, and Benzora next I with £512. The second horse, Cor- ; inax, had £276 against his name. , Wenday also was unlucky at the start. Thursby, Day Guard and Macroom was the order momentarily, after the dispatch, but at the end of a furlong Day Guard was out making play from Macroom, Tinakoa, King Lu. Benzora. Mervette, In the Shade, Paitonu and Town Bird. And that was how they raced down the back stretch. Macroom was right up with Day Guard at the top, and following them were Benzora, Mervette, In the Shade and Lucy Rose. The favourite showed a smart burst of speed at this stage which landed her at the head of affairs, and she led into the straight attended by Hakanoa, Day Guard, Macroom and Mervette. Lucy Rose hung on tenaciously in the run home and lasted long enough to beat Corinax by a neck. In the Shade was a neck back in third place, just ahead of Paitonu, King Lu Ti Tree, Flying Juliet, Hakanoa and Benzora. Huntly Handicap Backers were unlucky when they sorted out Te Money as favourite for the Huntly Handicap, for the Ellerslie representative missed the jump-out, and followed this up by finishing under > the judge’s box —off the course. However, Te Mpney was entrusted with £721, as against Indolent £6OB, the second horse, Unoco. carrying £284. Black Maire began smartest and led out from Indolent and Always, and the order down the back stretch was Black Maire, Always, Indolent, Pendavies, Maori Boy, Arikitoa, War Officer and Unoco. Black Maire was still doing it nicely out in front crossing the top, and at the home turn he was clear of Indolent, Unoco, Katuscha. i War Officer. High Tide and Te Money. 1 Indolent caught Black Maire at the : distance, and scored a very popular : win by half a length from Unoco. who finished on in good fashion. Black - Maire was fourth, and following him were Always. Te Money, Katuscha, - Arikitoa. and High Tide. Rangiriri High-Weight The Rangiriri High-Weight saw i good betting for Le Choucas £056 and 1 Queen Arch CSOI. Modest Bov being , .next choice at £435. with the winner. Hipo, only carrying £305. Prince Lu «

and King Smock began best, while Lunette was left, and the favourite also was slow to move out. With a furlong gone, Prince Lu was showing the way to Hipo, Red Comet, Modest Boy, King Smock, Barometer and Le Choucas, and when the top was reached Prince Lu still held a slight advantage from Hipo and Barometer, with Modest Boy and King Smock handy. Prince Lu was first to turn for home, with Barometer, Hipo, Modest Boy, King Smock and Queen Arch in close attendance. The favourite had only one horse behind him —his chance was hopeless. In the run to the judge Hipo did best to win by two lengths from Modest Boy, with King Smock one and a-half lengths away third. Then came Barometer, Prince Lu, Le Choucas. Queen Arch and Bright Day. Flying Handicap Kingfield wound up a solid favourite in the sprint, carrying a few more tickets than Lucy Rose. The latter was penalised from 7.5 to 7.11 for her win earlier in the day, but a 51b. allowance brought her weight down to 7.6. Awarere, Billikins and Lady Quex were all at good prices. The favourite got the best of the jump -out, being followed out of the tapes bv Billikins, Ruffles and Takutama. The last-named ran through very quickly, and was in front before they had gone a furlong and a-half, being attended at this juncture by Billikins, Awarere, Kingfield, Lady Quex and Wiiaka King. Takutama was still in front at the home turn, closely followed by B.filiI kins, Awarere, Lady Quex and KingI field. Once heads were straightened I for home Lady Quex made her effort, and was soon alongside Takutama, then to forge ahead and eventually win by a length and a-half from Takutama, with Lucy Rose (who had come from well back), another half length away. Kingfield was fourth and Whalia King, Awarere, Subdivision, Melissa and Billikins were next oyer the line. Takutama carried only £37 and paid well over a score for second. Te Rore Hack A big field of 20 lined up in the semi-darkness for the final struggle, and Valuation was made a big favourite with £B4l, but there was also plenty of money to be had about the chances of Leitrim, Archileen, Mark Mint and Brilliant Light. When they were let go Leitrim at once rushed to the front, followed by Otangihaku and . Mark Mint. Leitrim was still making the pace crossing the top, and was first into the home stretch, attended by Haviland. Brilliant Light. Mark Mint, Luminary and Prince of Orange, the last-named being very wide out. Brilliant Light and Leitrim were having a real set-to up the straight, and just as the former had Leitrim beaten Archileen flashed up on the extreme outside, getting uo on the post to beat Brilliant Light by a bead, with Leitrim third, half a length off. Prince of Orange and Some Ladv were close up, and Orchus and Gay Cockade were next. Later results are as follow: TE RAPA HANDICAP Of £400; 1 mile. 1— LUCY ROSE (G. A. FRIDAY’S ACCEPTANCES Press Associatioti BLENHEIM, Monday. Acceptances for the first day of the Marlborough meeting on Friday and Saturday next at Waterlea are as follow:

May Settle Down Wild Downs has not come right yet and on the West Coast circuit lie gave some sorry exhibitions, although they were no worse than a lot of the other trotters seen in action. Had solidity been a part of his make-up. Wild Downs would have caught more than one first certificate at New Plymouth and flanganui. He may have benefited by the trip, and perhaps will do better on Saturday.
