WATER CHLORINATED
SEQUEL TO DROWNING IN LAKE SAFEGUARDING of health Chlorination of the Lake Pupuke water supply is being carried out by the Health Department as the result of the drowning fatality in the lake on Wednesday afternoon. On Saturday, Dr. Herbert Chesson, medical officer of health, gave the views of the department regarding direct or indirect pollution of water supplies. Speaking generally, he described acts on the part of the public likely to cause pollution of a water supply as “inconsiderate selfishness.” “Tremendous trouble and expense are caused the department when incidents such as the present fatality take place,” he said. PLAY THE GAME “1 would ask people not to make it necessary for the department to put the statutory powers into force. Surely people can play the game when their own welfare is concerned. “Apart from any statutory powers calculated to secure the purity of water supplies, it is strange that people do not refrain from doing anything likely to bring about pullution. “Boating, bathing and even fishing, or any act which may cause direct or indirect pollution of a water supply constitutes an offence under the Health Act and renders an individual liable to a penalty.” Dr. Chesson said that close attention was being paid to the chlorination of the lake and the work was being supervised. He instanced the case in the South only a week or so ago in which a woman lost her life in a water supply. Tn that case, the reservoir was able to be emptied to a certain level, but, at Lake Pupuke, chlorination would have to be continued for an indefinite period.
