PROTEST AGAINST TAXES IN FRANCE 100,000 WILL BE IDLE (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9 a.m. PARIS, Sunday. As a protest against charity, State and municipal taxes, which are declared to be crippling the industry, the National Theatre Congress at Nice resolved to close all the French theatres, making idle 100,000 persons. The resolution operates from May 15, unless Parliament is summoned specially to give relief by amending the Budget. It at present stands convoked for the end of May. The chief objection is to the charity tax, known as "the right of the poor.”
