SPEED AT MANGERE
BIG FIELDS IN ACTION FAST SPEEDS RECORDED Only 2,000 people turned out to the Mangere Speedway on Saturday afternoon to witness Auckland’s second dirt track motor-racing meeting. The track was in good condition, hard and dry, and with little dust. It is one and a-quarter miles in circumference and slightly banked all the way. Over fifty racing cars were seen in action during the afternoon, also 20 motor-cycles. There were nine events, but some of the earlier races had to be run off in heats. which meant that the final events were finishing in the dusk. The meeting was held under the auspices of the Muriwai Motor-Racing Club, Ltd. Adequate arrangements had been made for the parking of the many hundreds of private cars which were present, and there was no congestion at the close. From the point of view of the spectators, the large fields in some races were a distinct drawback. On three occasions the limit cars had completed one lap before the scratch cars were away, and as there was no board showing how many laps each competitor had covered, the spectators were in the dark as to who was winning. The big race of the day, 10 laps, for cars which have lapped better than limit men had a lap lead on some halfdozen cars and a lap and a-half lead on the scratch men. Quite apart from the danger of so many cars on the course at once, it was impossible for anyone to follow the race accurately. Thrills were provided by airplane “stunts” by Captain M. C. McGregor in the Hamilton Airways Moth. The results are: MOTOR-CYCLE HANDICAP 5 laps A. W. Mattson (Raleigh) 1 W. H. Herbert (Indian) 2 P. A. Butler (A.J.S.) 3 Time, 6min 2 2-ssec.
