HOWITZERS IN ACTION
BATTERY AT ROTORUA (Special to THE SUE) ROTORUA, To-day. Oil Friday the howitzers were in action at the artillery range, off the Atiamuri Road. A number of visitors also went out to see the work of the New Zealand gunners. The fourth battery of howitzers, under Major Stillwell, M.C., Captain Currey, M.M., and Lieuts. Lewis, Mander and Masters, rendered a good account of themselves. Major R. Miles, D. 5.0., was directing at the observation-point and Captains Parkinson and A. T. Gillespie, M.C., at the firing-point. The work of the battery was most favourably commented upon. The preliminary running out of field telephones and establishing communication between observation and firing points was carried out with celerity, and the howitzers were soon sending their missiles over the top of the intervening hills. Colonel J. E. Duigan, D. 5.0., chief of staff of the Northern Command, and Colonel F. Symon, Director of Artillery, watched the proceedings with interest.
