MANY CANDIDATES

TASK FOR MUNICIPAL VOTERS BEWILDERING ARRAY On Wednesday electors of Auckland will be called upon to undertake what is probably the most formidable task yet presented to voters of this city, for never before has such a bewildering array of names, occupations and “tickets’’ been thrust upon the people on the occasion of any election. There are no fewer than 67 contenders for the 21 seats on the City I Council. Therefore the electors are required to reject 46 of the aspirants. It is impossible that all should be known to even a minority of the voters and in order that the public might have at least some idea of who is who and by whom candidates are sponsored a full list of aspirants is published, together with occupations and tickets. To have to make an intelligent selection in the polling booth would occupy a great deal of valuable time and if polling is heavy, and there is every indication that voters will be more than usually interested this year, hesitancy will almost certainly result in congestion. On the other hand, electors might be tempted, if leaving their choice to the last minute, to “put in” a “ticket” en bloc and so be done with an irksome difficulty. To simplify the process it is suggested that electors should cut out the accompanying list and at leisure pencil out the names of candidates for whom they do not wish to vote, taking great care that 21, no more, no fewer, are left. The authorities have no objection to cutings or lists or “tickets” being taken into the booth. Eighteen retiring members of the council are again seeking election, as denoted by the word “sitting.” The sponsoring organisations are denoted as follows: Progressive Citizens’ (17 candidates), P.C.; Labour Party (15), L.; People's Welfare Ticket (18), P.W.; People’s Ticket (20), P.; Auckland United Ratepayers’ Association (21), U; Independent Eleven (11), I.; Protestant Political Association (17), P.P.A.
