OUTSIDERS AT TE RAPA

Rose Lupin Best of All

BACKERS were all at sea at Te Rapa on Saturday, outsiders coming home with monotonous regularity, only one favourite returning a~ dividend, and that a second. Rose Lupin’s price was well on to half a century, Paddon was over a score, and Wiltshire was a good double-figure winner. In addition Star Comet and New Moon were also at double figures when they finished second. The opening of the autumn meeting of the Waikato Racing Club will ever be remembered for its big dividends and some great racing.

• With so many reverses, it was obvious, despite the fine weather and the large attendance, that the totalisator would suffer, but in a decrease of £274| (the respective figures were £31,534 and £34.275i> the W.R.C. cannot complain, for it got out of it rather well. Aussie led practically all the way to beat Mosque and Corinax in the Storey Memorial Cup, and in the sprint, the President’s Handicap, Benzora defeated New Moon and Vallar. The management of the day’s sport i left nothing to be desired, and although the last race was nearly half an hour late, being run in a rapidlyfailing twilight, this was brought about mainly by the large fields, which in some cases were unwieldy. Frankton Hurdles Vivo £429 was elected favourite for the Frankton Hurdles, with Highflown £397, next m demand. The eventual winner, Wiltshire, only carried £l2l, while Star Comet, who finished second, was an outsider with £ 39. Both horses returned double-figure prices. Ned Kelly was the first to show out from the inner, and led over the initial fence from Ripon Abbey. Bracken Abbey', Star Comet, Uralla, Cybele, Highflown, Odin and Vivo, the formation being close. At the second obstacle Glena Bay fell, and along, the back Ripon Abbey' went up to Ned Kelly', and soon displaced him. the pair being followed by Star Comet. Cybele, Ur all a, Wiltshire, Bracken Abbey and Vivo. Ripon Abbey' was slowing up approaching the straight, and Star Comet led round the bend from Ripon Abbey. Wiltshire, Ned Kelly, Uralla, Cybele, Odin, Highflown, Bracken Abbey' and Boomerday. Star Comet was first to land over the final fence, but hard ridden, Wiltshire got up to beat him by a length, with Vivo two and a-half lengths away third. Then came Uralla, Odin, Boomerday. Highflown, Ripon Abbey and Ned Kelly. When Glena Bay fell R. Thompson

received severe injuries. It was found on investigation that his left leg was broken. Maiden Stakes The Kingoland-Measurer bracket £367 was first choice for the Maiden Stakes with another combination, Prince of Orange-Te Hoia £257 in de-, mand, and Cruchan, who finished second, was only' supported to the extent of £l4O. lvingsland led out from Look Out and Prince of Orange, but when the field had settled down Cruchan went to the front and showed the way across the top to Look Out, Prince of Orange, Parfait Amour and Kingsland. Cruchan was still in the van when heads were turned for home, but Princess Snow. Parfait Amour. Look Out, Little Toy and Prince of Orange were all in close attendance, and the latter coming with a fine finish got up to win by a neck. Parfait Amour was a length and a-half away' thii*d, followed by' Princess Snow, Just Nell, Thurnus, Little Toy', Look Out, Pompeius, Joy Girl and Vaucluse. Pai Ana fell shortly after the start and Kingsland came down at the home turn. Juvenile Handicap Outsiders in Rose Lupin £SB, and Fraser £145, fought out the finish of the Juvenile Handicap, while favourites in Royal Finance £569, and Praetor £558 were beaten out of a place. Valstreet was left at the post. Pellette was the first to become conspicuous and showed the way to Currajong, Awamutu, Kiritahangi and Roy'al Finance, but crossing the top Awamutu took charge and led into the home stretch from Pellette, Rose Lupin, Bennie, Currajong, Crimestor, Flying P.rince and Royal Finance. Rose Lupin worked his way to the front inside the distance and was fighting out a hot finish with Pellette when Fraser appeared from the clouds and cutting Pellette out of second berth by a neck, failed by a head to reach the big outsider, who paid a great price. Currajong was fourth, followed by Roy'al Finance, Trig, Bennie, Flying Prince and Kiritahanga. Storey Memorial Cup Corinax £824 finished up a better favourite for the Storey Memorial Cup than Aussie £752, but when it came to the actual race nothing had a chance with the Te Awamutu crack, who led from end to end, making his own pace, which was by no means fast. At the end he to be veryhard ridden to win. Aussie was taken to the front when the barrier was released, and led out of the straight from In the Shade, Le Choucas, Mervette, Corinax, Ti Tree, Flying Juliet, Mosque, Wenday and King Lu, the last pair being Thursby and Queen Arch. Along the back the leader slowed the field down, and Mosque moved up to a handy' position, and crossing the top was. just in behind Aussie, their nearest attendants being Queen Arch, Ti Tree, King Lu, Flying Juliet and In the Shade, all these in close order. The topweight swung into the straight with an easy stride from Mosque, Queen Arch, Royal Doulton, King Lu, Ti Tree,

Corinax and In the Shade, and being hard pressed. Morris rode him to victory by half a length from Mosque, who was a similar distance in front of the favourite. In the Shade was next, followed by Thursby, King Lu, Koval Doulton, Ti Tree, Flying Juliet, Wenday and Queen Arch. The first half-mile took 52 2-5. Linley Hack Backers were nearer tile mark in the .Linley Hack Handicap, the three best fancied candidates fighting out the issue. Indolent £733, ranked as favourite over Kaha £653, Te Money £5Ol. Furrie, Rangikaha and Panawhaka were left, while the favourite was also slow to move away. Gay Cockade began smartly and led from Always, Arikitoa, Some Lady, Black Maire, Indolent, Pendavies, Te Money and Kaha, but Arikitoa shortly afterwards hit the front and showed the way across the top to Gay Cockade, Black Maire, Always, Indolent, Some Lady and Kaha. When the home turn was reached Gay Cockade was practically on terms with Arikitoa, the pair being closely attended hv Always, Indolent, Black Maire, Kaha, Brampton, Some Lady and Te Money. Halfway down the running Kaha dretv out and after a sharp tussle with the favourite gained a three-quarter length decision. Te Money, a similar distance away, third, and Gay Cockade a good fourth. Next to arrive were Always, Black Maire, Hakanoa. Arikitoa, Brampton and Some Lady. Puketaha High-weight Mithra £9lB, was a good favourite Cor the High-Weight Handicap, with a drop to Respirator £502, and Paitonu £404. Paddon was only entrusted with £lO9. but he duly won. Prince Lu led out from Hipo, Sir Russell. Owairaka and Paddon, and was going nicely in front at the top, where Owairaka had moved up to second berth, with Sir Russell. Paddon. Hipo and Respirator in close attendance. Prince Lu was still the pilot when heads were turned for home, but Owairaka, Sir Russell and Paddon were close up, followed by Hipo, Paitonu and Mithra. A great race ensued to the post, where Paddon, who finished strongly, got the verdict by less than a length from Respirator with the favourite a neck away third Sir Russell was fourth, and then came Hipo, Paitonu. Modest Boy, King Smock and Prince Lu. President’s Handicap Spirited betting in the President’s Handicap saw Vallar £694 finish in pride of place on the machine, Kingfield £648 being next in demand, £1 better backed than Benzora, while New Moon, who finished second, was one of the outsiders with £B9. Tea Time' was left at the start, Subdivision, on the rails, being the first away, followed by Kingfield, Billikins, Lady Quex, Benzora, Macroom and Vallar. When the top was readied Billikins was just in behind Subdivision, while the favourite had also moved up handy, and approaching the home bend Vallar was in front to show the way into the straight from Subdivision, Town Bird, Lady Quex, Billikins, Macroom, Value and Benzora. The favourite looked a winner fifty yards from the post, but Benzora and'New Moon came with a great rattle and caught the rider of the favourite napping, Benzora winning by half a length from the outsider, with Vallar a neck away third and Macroom close up fourth. Then came Lady Quex, Kingfield, Subdivision and Ruffles. Beerescourt Hack Sixteen lined up for the concluding event, Valuation £745 and Standfast £682 being heavily supported, but there was also good money for Brilliant Light £515 and Unoco £507, the pool being a good one. When they had settled down Brilliant Light, badlydrawn, showed enough early speed to get over to the rails, and he was in charge at the half mile, with Air King, Mark Mint and Valuation on the outside of him, Standfast being a long way back and in a hopeless position. Brilliant Light showed the way into the straight from Mark Mint, Air King,

Valuation, Otangihaku, Maori Boy and Unoco. the last-named being tucked away in on the rails in a very handy position. The leader looked like retaining his advantage inside the distance, when Unoco and then Maori Boy put in their claims, and a rare finish resulted. Unoco got up to beat Brilliant Light by a head, with Maori Boy another head away third. Mark Mint was a good fourth, Some Lady fifth, the very -unlucky Standfast sixth, and Orchus and - Otangihaku next. Standfast was probably going faster than anything else over the last furlong.
