FALLEN JOCKEYS

A CHAPTER OF ACCIDENTS I Accidents galore marred last week’s hurdle race at Randwick. Half a dozen starters out of the nine who made up the held toppled over or stopped at various stages of the race, and, with the one ambulance occupied with carrying the injured away from the seven furlongs post, the boys who fell at the last jump were left on the course for over 10 minutes. "When May Day, Grosvenor, and Stony were scratched, punters went tor Ego in the betting ring. W .H. was a solidly backed second pick. About the only other runner fancied was Honest Jack, who was backed from all sorts of prices down to nice odds. Apart iVoin the chapter of accidents, the striking feature of the race was the peculiar handling of Ego by R. Cutler. Near the mile post, when running second, Ego was checked, and as a result Dr. Grace and W.B. got such a break that only falls on their part could have given Ego a chance. For a newcomer, Dr. Grace ran a great race. He opened up a lead on W.B. between the five and the turn, but in the straight W.B. finished better. to win by half a length. First of the runners to turn it up was old Myamley, who dropped out at the mile jump. At the seven, Reynaldo (L. Watson, who sustained concussion) fell, and Honest Jack lost his rider. Old Steadfast was bothered by the horse lying on the track, and apparently his rider lost his reins. Old Steadfast then dropped further and further behind. At the last jump Ego, who was running third, hit heavily, and fell. Zionist was unable to avoid him, and came down over him. Then old Steadfast ambled along, and, too tired to jump, he straddled the obstacle and tipped rider A. Barnes out unhurt.
