MIDNIGHT THIEF

GAOL FOR SIX MONTHS HINDU’S FUTILE ALIBI When Givan Ganesh said at the Police Court yesterday that he had evidence that would prove him not guilty on a charge of theft, he prevailed on Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., to grant him a remand. THE witness appeared tnis morning, but could throw no fresh light on the situation and Ganesh has now been taken back to gaol. The charge against Ganesh, a hawker, aged 25, was that he had stolen 10s and a pair of trousers of a total value of £2 7s Gd from Ghana Kunvarji. Yesterday the owner of the stolen property said that he had wakened in the small hours of the morning to find Ganesh in the room with his hand in the coat which witness had hung behind the door. He had sprung out of bed to chase Ganesh, only to find that the man had taken his trousers. A 10s note was missing from the coat. Ganesh then asserted that he knew nothing of the theft. His landlady could prove an alibi for him. This morning the landlady denied that she had knowledge of her guest's movements. He had a bach at the back of the section, and slie saw him only occasionally. Chief-Detective Hammond mentioned that Ganesh had just completed a term of two years in gaol. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: And now he has another six months. It is a pity we cannot get this man out of the country. He is a menace to his fellowcountrymen. He knocks them about and robs them.
