NELSON RACES
SUCCESSFUL OPENING TOTALISATOR INCREASE RABBI’S CUP VICTORY (Special to THE SUN > NELSON, Friday. | Though the Nelson meeting opened to-day in beautiful weather, the track was heavy as a result of j recent rains, including a little this morning. There was a good attendance, and the machine put through £8,752, against £7,184 on the first day last year, an increase of £1,568. Odds on Favourite Odds were laid on Acredity in the Novice Stakes, and she won fairly comfortably at the finish. Dancing Star shot into the lead as soon as the field settled down, and she led Sambur, Makeup and Acredity to the straight. There Acredity, who vas going well, came on the outer, and gradually overhauling the leaders eventually won by two lengths from Makeup, who stayed on just too well from Sambur. Araemo was fourth and High Peak last. Everything except the winner stopped badly, and she could not have done much better at the finish. Easy, for Denver Hinds The Richmond Trot was a very simple affair, Denver Hinds, who had been doing good work lately, was backed to a short price, carrying nearly twice as much as the second favourite, R-adiola. Hardiness led through the straight from Waipuki, Great Wilkes and Denver Hinds, and this was the order for half the journey, when Denver Hinds ran past the leaders as though they were standing still, and from there on the race was as good as over. The favourite led a procession into the straight, and was not headed in the run to the winning post, scoring an easy victory by a length and a-half from Waipuki, who was lengths in front of Great Wilkes, with Hardiness, Lady Bee, George the Fourth and Radiola next. Favourite Beaten Probably owing to the heavy state of the course, Black Mint wound up a better favourite than Kameses for the Nelson Cup. From a fine start. Kiibronsyth led through the straight from Rabbi, and Rameses, with Borsaline and Lady Gay next. Soon after entering the back stretch rapid changes occurred at the six-furlong post, where Rameses had gone to the front from a thickly bunched field, in which Rabbi, Twink, Goosestep, Discourse and Kilbronsyth were close behind the leader. Then Black Mint ran from last to first and at the half-mile he and Rameses had drawn several lengtiis clear of the field. The pair turned for home together, and Black Mint looked like coming on alone, but when Rabbi came at him he quickly had his measure. Rabbi finished well to win by a length, while Black Mint came again and beat Goosestep a nose for second place. Borsaline, who was rather unlucky, was fourth and Lady Gay, Rameses and Kilbronsyth next. Black Mint would have been harder to beat had he not gone to the front so soon. Fallow’s Surprise ‘The Trentham-trained Fallow brought off a big surprise in the Hope l-lack Handicap, for which Kiriana, Masher and Smithereens were the public fancies. Lucklaine was left at the post and took no part in the race. Catrena soon went to the front, and at the fivefurlong post led from Fallow, Smithereens and Masher. The favourite, Kiriana, went back to last. Catuna was done with at the home turn, and Smithereens took charge, but in the final run Fallow with a good pull in the weights, got up and beat the West Coaster a head. Kiriana finished well in third place a length and a-half away, and would have been hard to beat had he been better placed at the home turn. Catrina was fourth and Masher and Shining Star followed. Arch Arrow Runs True Last Crust was very little better backed than Maui in the Stewards’ Handicap, and there was good backing for Arch Arrow. Arch Arrow otbrilliantly and led Nastori and Ronaki to the straight. Arch Arrow, kept up to his work, maintained his lead all the way, and won by a length from Ronaki. Nastori dropped out and Maui finished fast in third place, threequarters of a length behind Ronaki. Then came Nastori, Last Crust and Fee Simple. Ronaki looked very big and should be improved by the race. Last Crust was going well at the home turn and did not run on. Nastori’s rider was unable to do his mount justice through his cap coming down over his eyes. From End to End Loch Bank won the Waiiti Trot from end to end. Lady Bee and Waipuki followed him to the straight, where Lady Bee dropped out, and doing his best, Waipuki got to within a length of the winner, who, however, won as he liked. Lady Bee was six lengths away third and George the Fourth and Belle o’ Mine were next. A Great Finish The finest finish of the day was witnessed in the Electric Handicap. The field did not leave on even terms, Dainty Ways and Smithereens getting away badly. Arrow Boy took up the running, and led along the back from Dermod, The Dove, Royal Flower and Smithereens. At the turn for home. Arrow Boy had a slight advantage of Dermod and The Dove, and Arrow Boy and Dermod were hard at it in the straight, when Smithereens began to overhaul them. Smithereens finished best and the three shot across the line together. The judge placed Dermod first, Arrow Boy second and Smithereens third, and they were followed home by The Dove and Dainty Ways. Had Smithereens come on the scene a shade sooner he would have won, and the day’s racing might improve him. One Dividend Event Only four contested the Waimea Handicap and of these Ronaki was a sound favourite. He followed Miss Mercia into the straight and from the home turn came away to win easily by a length and a-half, while Miss Mercia beat Modern a length for second place, with Double Mint last.
