WORK AT WHANGAREI DREDGING TO KIOREROA (from Our O ten Correspondent J WHANGAREI. TodSv The work of dredging a channel ,t Whangarei to afford harbour trance for ocean steamers past Onerail 1. the present deep-sea wharf, Kioreroa, the site of new wharfage near to the main trunk railway, on the land side of Whangarei, within eas, access of the town, is proceeding steadily. At this morning's meeting of the Harbour Board the engineer reported that ISO feet had been dredged during the last month, representing 5,120 cubic yards of spoil pumped by the Harbour Board's dredge through 796 feet of floating discharge pipe. i n addition, some 1,200 cubic yards hare been, removed from the sandstone bar which at one point obstructs the new channel. The district engineer of the New Zealand Railways wrote to the hoard, saying that the Kioreroa Railway Bridge, subject to minor repairs, was good for only a period of three years, and that the department did not pro. pose to undertake the expenditure necessary to prolong its life beyond that period. The board was asked te make arrangements for the position that would come to pass at the end of that peri 11, a position which th< work of dredging the channel to the new Kioreroa Wharf is designed te anticipate. In connection with this work the purchase of heavy dredge pipes, at ■ tender of £2lO by Messrs. A. and G Price, and the purchase of a s<Mnr barge for £2OO were sanctioned by the board as urgently-needed plant.
