On The Ball Again

RUGBY OPENS TO-MORROW

Good Season Promised

GOOD Rugby is promised in the new season which opens to morrow. More transfers were granted at Wednesday’s meeting of the Rugby Union and many of these will have the effect of strengthening the weaker teams in the senior grade. On the oval at Eden Park to-morrow Ponsonby and Grammar Old Boys will provide the big game. Strengthened by the All Blacks Lucas and 2leWilliams, and the ex-Hawke’s Bay All Black, Swain, Ponsonby is regarded as the “hot” favourite for the championship. Although they should account for Grammar a good exhibition should result.

In conversation with a Sun man at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, last Saturday, Carieton said that he was

certainly coming to Auckland early in the season. He was not sure of the time of his arrival, but his plans might come to finality any day. Hast Saturday, Carleton, who has struck form early this season, was playing centre for Christchurch Old Boys, who defeated Varsity, last season’s champions, by 14-13. The Old Boys’ team has seven All Blacks in it and should be one of the strongest club teams in the Dominion. Burrows and Clark, the hookers, have both worn the Silver Fern, as have Dailey, Page, Carleton, Harris and Mehrtens. Carleton will need no introduction to Auckland Rugby enthusiasts. He represented Canterbury for several seasons as centre and was an important figure in spirited attempts made by the Southerners to wrest the Ranfurly Shield from Hawke’s Bay. When the trials for the representative team to tour South Africa were played, Carleton was right on form but, much to the surprise of experts, he was not picked. When Cooke was not able to travel, however, the young Canterbury player had his chance and in the land of the Springboks he played in 13 matches, including three tests. As a defensive player particularly, he was one of the successes of the tour. It is thought probable that he may play for College Rifles.
