TALLYMEN’S DISPUTE
DECISION RESERVED Denial that pressure had been brought to bear on 12 permanent tallymen in the employ of the Union Steamship Company to induce them to resign from the union was made at the Arbitration Court this morning. Mr. David ‘Carter, manager of the company, said the men had resigned voluntarily. Mr. H. J. Sheppard, for the union, said it was singular that all the resignations had been received on the same ,day. The union asked additional provision in the award to cover permanent tallymen by the addition of the following clause: “Any person substantially employed as a tally clerg for a period of one week or more shall be classed as a permanent.” The rate of pay asked for such workers was £5 10s 9d a week. Mr. O. E. Wright, for the employers, said there was no hardship under present conditions. The court reserved decision.
