BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL

The present Birkenhead Borough Council held its final meeting on Wednesday evening, Mr. A. Hadfield, Deputy-Mayor, presiding. The engineer reported, in connection with the water reticulation loan of £5,230, that the amount expended to date was £3,820. There was a balance for further work of £1.200. It was decided to extend the fourinch main in Vermont Road to the boundary, at a cost of £340, and to lay a two-inch pipe in Kia Ora Road, at a cost of £l2, also to connect a fourinch main in Puriri Avenue from Birkdale Road tc Kiwi Road, at a cost of £S4O. The street collection for Poppy Day on last Friday resulted in the sum of £43 10s 7d being collected—a record for the district. The Deputy-Mayor expressed liis appreciation to all who helped on that day, and to the citizens for giving so freely. A letter was received from th retary of the Auckland Automobile Association stating that his council has made representations to the Devonport Ferry Company in support of those made by the Birkenhead Borough Connell in connection with extension ©f the vehicular ferry time-table, and that the charges made on the Birkenhead run be made the same as those on the Devonport run.
