“LONDON LOVE”

NEW ROLE FOR FAY COMPTON “London Love” is a well-staged and well-acted popular melodrama. Based on a story by Arthur Applin, it tells how a girl of the East End becomes a big film star, and her happiness is linked with that of a young sailor, who is accused of having murdered the girl’s stepmother. The role of the girl is played by Fay Compton, who portrays drama and comedy with equal facility, and is particularly good in her interpretation of a girl who is facing the film camera for the first time. Moore Marriott gives a brilliant performance of Aaron Levinsky, the owner of an East End clothing store. It is perfect down to the last detail, and is notable for the delightful sense of comedy and for the ease with which Mr. Marriott changes from comedy to pathos. John Stuart appears in the role of the girl’s lover, and Miss Mander gives a good .study of the villain, who for his own ends introduces the girl to the films.

Some wonderful shots include the interior of a film studio and a dramatic trial scene at the Old Bailey. There is also an interesting Jink with the past in the opening scene of the film, which shows Whitehall decorated for the coronation of King Edward YU.
