TROTTONG

(By ABAYDOS) MAIN EVENTS AT CAMBRIDGE

WANGANUI WINNERS PROMISE WELL FOR TREBLE NEXT WEEK Providing they are not missing from the acceptance list this evening, “Abaydos’’ is prepared to see three Wanganui winners in Great Delight, Our Nancy and Haerenga Pai, playing an important part in the three main items at Cambridge. principal events to come up for decision on May 4 at the popular Cambridge trotting function are the Cup, President’s Handicap and Farewell Handicap, and these present, with their large fields of well-performed competitors, tempting scope for. keen followers of the pastime, who believe they can spot the “treble.” When secretary Stopford’s list of acceptors is finally adjusted, the numbers will no doubt be diminished, but there will be plenty of attractive material left to ensure stirring racing. The presence of several candidates which performed pleasingly at the recent Hawera, Taranaki, Wanganui meetings, will lend additional colour to the contests and give early selectors something to think about when arriving at their choice. President’s Handicap The first heat of the treble to be decided is the President’s Handicap, a ten-furlong flutter with the weight to P: f There is a good collection or saddle merchants engaged, and while 50 per cent, of those handicapped are on the front line, nothing can be taken very seriously, although Benefice and Horoto may be possibiliI ties. Admiral Lock, Liberate and Andover are likely candidates, and Silver Link is capable of a decent effort, while Hockaway appears to have taken a new lease of life. Dad’s Hope is showing good form at this business; Carmel is always worth consideration, while High Sea’s Hawera form suggests he will be a tough proposition. Our Nancy won both saddle races at Wanganui most impressively, and Scandal looks the pick of the others. Half a dozen early fancies will be Our Nancy. High Sea, Carmel, Dad’s Hope, Liberate and Horoto. Cambridge Cup Class is well represented in the “king pin” event, the field including Great Delight (Taranaki and Wanganui Cups), Itichore (Manawatu Cup), Roekburn (Thames Cup), Concertina (To Aroha Cup), and runners-up for several recent cup contests in Cora Tacks, Carmel, Derby Lynn and Tony Victor. But apart from this contingent there are several others engaged with pretentions to cup class, while Machine Gun. a splendid performer last season, gives further tone to the event. Two recent winners of im-

provers' heats over two miles in Peter Pirate and Warspite, are on the limit, and they will find High Sea and Cora Tacks tough opponents, although High Sea has not so far this season shown himself ready for a journey. Reremai has not had much racing, and Explosion was disappointing at Hawera and New Plymouth, and Carmel after his showing last Saturday will no doubt be preferred. Of the 36yd division Derby Lynn will appeal most -after her Hawera displays, although Richore if in the humour could repeat the performance of Dillon Huon last year. Great Delight is a genuine customer and will be knocking when it comes to the finish, and Concertina is sure to go another good race. Of those further back. Tony Victor and Machine Gun must be considered. Pre-post backers will be looking for Great Delight. Derby Lynn, Cora Tacks, Carmel, Concertina and Peter Pirate. Fare well Handicap The last “leg” is the final heat on the card, apt’y named Farewell Handicap. and nick-named by punters the “recovery” stakes. Off the front Admiral Lock will run his usual solid “go,” but Maerenga Pai may have too much pace for him at the finish.
