Waikato’s Day
FIXTURE OPENS TO-MORROW
Corinax Will be Fancied
WITH big fields likely to go to the post, sportsmen will assuredly be up against it in their endeavours to find the winning names to-morrow at Te Rapa on the occasion of the opening of the autumn meetiug of the Waikato Racine Club. Below “Early Bird's” comprehensive review of the first day’s card may assist in this direction. The big event is the Storey Memorial Cup. and Aucklanders themselves have strong faith in Corinax repeating his effort oil this course in the spring, when he captured the Waikato Cup.
\ LL that is required now to make V the fixture a big success is the forcing into temporary retirement of Jupiter Pluvius, for he is an enemy of 99 per cent, of the sporting fraternity. The fine big course at Tc Rapa is on the dead side, but nevertheless in excellent order, even if it will not make for fast times. For the convenience of Auckland city sportsmen, special trains for the convincing ground depart on Saturday at 6.45 a.m. and 5.7 a.m. (the latter scheduled to stop at Newmarket only), and on Monday there is one train only, leaving Auckland at 7.45 a.m. Frankton Hurdles A field of 19 for the opening event, and a hurdle race at that, indicates what sportsmen are up against from the start, for this is just the average number of acceptors. On the top is Pouri, who will need to have made a sharp improvement over the vast fortnight to have a show. Next is the Taranaki representative. Vivo, a notable recruit to hurdling. She showed splendid form at Awapuni for
is liis day. Mervette lias a v «-» handy weight, and. as she can get th. journey, may be the best of tw under eight stone. Le Choucas Shbde and Ti Tree are three from mentioned is also in the "n'ext'evm,' Perhaps if Lc Choucas takes on wfth e TrVre n ei' V !!:- C m he V U with li tree) he may be the best et the trio. Mosque is small but and is reported to be well forward' Thursby is a most likely candidate f , he is at his top form, and furthermore the conditions will be all in his Queen Arch, a possibility, mav be r* served for the High-Weight. *Wendav is fast coming back to her best and most of those above her will find’diffi eulty to concede the weight to her Ti Tree is a light-weight possibility.* and with Le Choucas should furnish a strong combination. It is probable that the field will number 11. and favouritism may rest with CORINAX MERVETTE Linley Hack Handicap The hack mile will see quite a good field engaged, among the likely ones being Black Maire, Hakanoa. Some Lady. Te Money. Kaha. Indolent. Standfast. Brampton and Gay Cockade.' Of this lot Some Lady and Standfast are also in the final event, so that the position becomes rather complicated, for both are possibilities. Perhaps the final summing-up by speculators will favour STANDFAST INDOLENT Puketaha High-Weight The top-weight was showing good form this time last year, but it is some time since lie showed up. Le Choucas will be well suited by the class, while Queen Arch cannot be overlooked. Modest Boy has pace, and this race might be to his liking. Mithra is coming back to her good form of the spring, for her second placing at Avondale recently was a game effort. Hipo is not the horse he was, although his second the first day at Avondale was encouraging. Paddon is to have his first outing for a couple of seasons: at his best he is really good. There are nine on the minimum, exactly half the field, and the pick may be Owairaka, Prince Lu, Auriculus, Red Comet and Sir Russell. When the totalisator closes it may be that the favourites will be MITHRA MODEST BOV President’s Handicap The sprint field is a fine one, and presents many problems. The first of these difficulties is in regard to thft state of the going, which if heavy may prejudice the prospects of Vallar, who would take all sorts of beating on a ■firm track. Benzora te back to his best form, which puts him right at the top. and he is nicely weighted. Kingfield will revel in the heavy going, and Lady Quex is fast enough if she can handle the conditions. Subdivision is speedy, and Billikins will be quite at home, for she is partial to soft ground. Lucy Rose may be seen finishing in great style up the long straight, and Value is improving. Tea
a win and a second, defeating Red Fuchsia the first time and losing bv a short head to Elicit, the next day. Now she is in very light. Ned Kelly is an improving sort, and he ran two solid races at Wnangarei. The Gala Day—Boomerday bracket should take a lot of beating, for the former at least shows much promise. However, Gala Day is badly treated compared with Vivo, and the latter on the figures should again beat him. Higliflown, the way he was going with Roman Abbey, well clear of the field at Avondale, only to tip out at the penultimate fence, may have more fortune this time. Of the others a word can be said in favour of Ripon Abbey. Odin and Ivaihoremai, while interest attaches to the displays of the novices Glena Bay. Star Comet, Cybelle and Te Waka. Public form points to the favourites being VIVO HIGIIFLOWN Maiden Stakes With 28 acceptors there is sure to be a lot of luck required at the barrier and in the rush to get a position before filing across the top. Reducing the field by exactly half, good chances ran be said to be possessed by Day Guide, Parfait Amour, Tliurnus. Vaucluse, Just Nell, Kiri. Liona, Pai Ana, Catonian, Kingsland. Measurer, Prince of Orange, Dainty Manners and Look Out. Of this lot the best half-dozen may be Parfait Amour, Vaucluse. Catonian, Measurer. Prince of Orange and Look Out. and to fine it down to a pair backers may declare in favour of LOOK OUT PRINCE OF ORANGE Juvenile Handicap Half the large field of 22 have shown form ranging from fair to good, and among them could be named Awamutu and Flying Prince (who fought out the two-year-old races on this course six months ago), Bennie (very much at home in bad ground). Pellette. Currajong. Praetor. Fraser. Royal Finance. Valstrcet. Rose Lupin. Taurua. Trig and Ruling Chief, the lastnamed being regarded as a most premising youngster. Good beginners will be in the picture, so that the barrier positions will be of importance. The favourites may be PRAETOR ROYAL FINANCE Storey Memorial Cup If the top-weight is started it will be interesting to see how he fares over the 10 furlongs. Aussie is extremely well in. but he could not be fancied on other than a dry track. King Lu is at his best and the conditions are certain to be in his favour. Corinax is more seasoned than King Lu. and he promises to be the hardest to beat up that two-furlong straight, as when ho won the Waikato Cup six months back. Royal Doulton would be hard to beat if caught absolutely right, and so. too. would Flying Juliet, who is reported to be doing everything asked of her at Te Rapa. Desert Glow is a likely contender for supremacy: that is. if it
Time is coming back to form, and of those further down Ruffles, Whaka King, Macroom and Waltzer please most. On a sodden course the favourite is almost certain to be Kingfield, but under ordinary conditions backers may plump for VALLAR BENZORA Beerescourt Hack There are some particularly smart hacks engaged in the final event, notably Maori Boy, Air King. Valuation, Some Lady, Brilliant Light, Vnoco, The Jack Jumper, Arcade (in the same stable as Valuation). Standfast, VvhaKama and Flapperette. In the event o. being reserved for this race Standfast will be favourite, or in his abserce VALUATION BRILLIANT LIGHT
