Many Gallops at Te Rapa

INTERESTING WORK-OUTS (Special to THE SUN) HAMILTON, Thursday. Contrary to expectations, there was not a great deal of activity on the tracks at Te Rapa on "Wednesday morning, and. apart from a little easy work, the only try-outs of any consequence " erP over hurdles. The course was in good order, and track-watchers who had assembled early to see something interesting were doomed to disappointment. The most interesting item of the morning proved to be the duel between Pouri and Gala Day over five flights of hurdles. The former gave an exceptionally fine exhibition of fencing, and was holding his companion, who hit one of the jumps, comfortably at the finish. Pouri, however, is scarcely as ready as Gala Day, who may be expected to prove the better of the pair on Saturday. Another interesting piece of schooling work was witnessed when Regent, Komak, and Star Comet set out for a gallop over four flights of hurdles. Regent- gave a most pleasing display of good clean jumping, and finished ahead of his two companions. Star Comet also gave a satisfactory display, but Komak walked away lame in front, and is accordingly missing from the acceptances for Saturday. Regent was once fairly useful on the flat, and, while age has taken the edge off his speed, his effort would indicate that he is more than a remote possibility for a hurdle event. A pleasing exhibition of fencing was provided by Boomerday and, Wiltshire, two of the acceptors for Saturday’s batten events. There was not a great deal between them, and both are in splendid order to tackle their immediate engagements. Ready to Spring j Mervette and Valuation were two of | Tinker’s team to gallop very freely on [ the plough. Both are very dangerous I candidates for the local meeting, and [ should not lack much on the score of | condition. The work that he has been executing lately has rounded Paddon nicely into shape for winter racing, but he will probably require a little racing \ before he is seen at his best. A couple j of seasons ago Paddon was a good per- I former, but he has not raced since, ' and can scarcely be ready for the local fixture. He assisted Mervette over the last seven furlongs of her circuit on the plough yesterday morning, and acquitted himself very creditably. Looking well, but evidently in need of a race, King Smock has arrived at Te Rapa. He has a wonderful record on the local course, and while it is too much to expect him to win on Saturday, the race should sharpen him up sufficiently to render him dangerous on 'Monday. Thursday Morning’s Work With heavy rain falling, conditions were anything but pleasant for training operations at Te Rapa this morning, and with the going on the holding side, times were decidedly slow. The course proper, on which all- with the exception of Macroom, Wenday, Glena Bay, and Ned Kelly were worked, was trestled out for a distance of 75 feet. Macroom was sent over fjve .furlongs on her own, the Archiestown mare running out the distance comfortably in 1.(1 4-5. Wenday, from a moving start, executed a round nicely in 1.55 2-5. The chestnut daughter of Day Comet is stated to have been a little unlucky at Whangarei, and, while she may not be quite up to the clAss in the Storey Memorial Cup, she promises to be prominent during the meeting. Glena Bay, who is to make his debut over hurdles on Saturday, did a solid round, getting to the end of a mile in 1.49 1-5, and the full distance in 1.55 2-5. Indolent and Pompeius covered six furlongs in 1.25, the first three occupying 40 l-ssec. Indolent, who is very well just now, was doing Hie better of the two at the finish, although Pompeius also went well in the sticky going. Seven furlongs was the task allotted Flying Juliet, the Romeo mare getting to the end of the distance in 1.39. She hit out very freely throughout. Always negotiated six furlongs in 1.27, while New Moon was let off with a sprint down the straight. Day Guard, who may need a race before he can be recommended, was finishing on in good style over seven furlongs in 1.42, while Ruby Dawn, a maiden from Matamata, occupied 1.46 4-5 over a similar distance. The Storey Memorial candidate, Mosque, was well clear of Ruffles and Lady Quex, and, in fact, going away from them, at the conclusion of a tivefurlong gallop, which occupied 1.9 4-5. Lady Quex was the last of the three to finish. In the Maiden Prince of Orange accounted for Orchus over five furlongs in 1.11 2-5, and could have done better. He promises to run a good race in the Maiden on Saturday. Pendavies had a good margin to spare over Panawhaka and Boomerday at the close of seven furlongs, run in 1.43 2-5. Pendavies was going strongly when the post was reached, and it showed that it will not be long ere he is ready to show his best form. Carrying a good weight, Unoco impressed by the decisive manner in which he defeated King Smock over seven furlongs in 1.44 1-5. Royal Finance, who gave the impression of being able to handle the going well, defeated Hipo in a fivefurlong effort that took them 1.13.
