COAL BOUGHT FROM N.Z.
VICTORIA TAKES HEAVY SHIPMENTS CHEAPER THAN FROM N.S.W. MELBOURNE. Thursday. Because of the New South Wales coal stoppage Victorian consumers, including gas consumers, have arranged for the import of big supplies from New Zealand and England. The steamer Kaikorai has already brought a large cargo from New Zealand, and the Kaitoke is due shortly with another 4,000 tons. The Soutli African mines are also making bold bids to enter the Australian trade. The price of New Zealand and English coals is known to be several shillings lower than the cost of cargoes shipped from Newcastle. Importers state that if the proposals made by Mr. T. R. Bavin, Premier of New South Wales, had been accepted the necessity to patronise oversea* firms would not have arisen.
