WORRIED 75-YEAR-OLD MOTHER GAOL FOR VAGRANT Half his time stupefied through drinking methylated spirits, Joseph Merrick refuses to do any work and spends his time annoying h>s mother, who is 75 years old. rpiIIS morning at the Police Court -*■ Merrick, a driver, aged 12, pleaded not guilty on a charge of vagrancy. Constable Moore recalled a long acquaintance with Merrick. "He hangs round his mother’s back yard and refuses to go away or try and get work,” he asserted. Merrick: I look for work, but I am barred from getting it. Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M.: You are loafing on your mother and have been doing so for years. Eight times you have been here. Sentence of three months’ imprisonment was imposed, the magistrate remarking that a reappearance would mean a year.
