KING THANKS FRANCE

NOBLE MESSAGE OF HIS GRATITUDE PEOPLE DEEPLY MOVED Times Cable Reed. 1.5 p.m. LONDON, Tuesday. The Paris correspondent of “The Times” states that the British Embassy has issued a communique, that his Majesty has taken the opportunity of Saint George’s Day to thank the British people for the sympathy shown him during his illness. The British Ambassador has been instructed to take the same opportunty of expressing, on behalf of his Majesty, to the French nation his high appreciation of all the proofs of sympathy so generously offered by Frenchmen of all classes. The King’s own message has deeply impressed France, says “Le Figaro,” describing it as distinguished by true greatness. The paper adds: “The letter contains accents of nobility, ideas of breadth and loftiness to which we, alas, are too little accustomed. That such speech and thought should come from the head of the British State is not mere chance; it is due to the fact that this State, situated as we know it to be, is also gifted with temperament, rich in nobility, and greatness. The British Throne preserves in the new Europe the power of ancient things.”
