LOST GERMAN COLONIES

HOLDERS OF MANDATES NO CHANGES PROBABLE (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) LONDON, Tuesday. In the House of Commons, in reply to a question, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Sir Austen Chamberlain, said the mandates for the German colonies, which were derived from the Treaty of Versailles, and not from the League of Nations, were definitely allotted to the existing holders. Sir Austen said he was not aware of any suggestions that any of the mandatories wished to be relieved of their responsibilities. The position of Britain was explained to Germany at Locarno, and had been repeated several times since then. In the unlikely event of any existing mandate being vacated, Britain would be prepared to consider the position of Germany with that of any other member of the League, but the League could not make any engagement in advance on the strength of such a hypothetical contingency.
