EDEN COMPETITION JWC:' PRIZES PRESENTED The prize-giving ceremony in connection with the Easter trade display competition, under the auspices of the Eden Chamber of Commerce, was held iin the Empire Theatre, Dominion Road, last evening. The chairman, Mr. H. Cliffe, prej sided, and on the platform with him was the Minister of Health, the Hon. |A. J. Stallworthy, and Mr. G. C. i Munns, M.P. for Roskill. ! In introducing the Parliamentarians, i the president traced briefly the history of the chamber since it was formed six months ago. It had a small beginning, but to-day was growing into a powerful body, he said. It had accomplished something in having telephone box accommodation and police supervision in the district looked into. Mr. Munns said to-day was becomthe age of monopoly and people were inclined to shop in the city on account of the lure of the big shops. He wished the chamber every success in its efforts to keep trade in the district. BUSINESS ETHICS Mr. Stallworthy, before presenting the prizes, remarked that all great movements and revolutions in the world had small beginnings. In enunciating what he termed “ethics of business,” he said that business was not something one set up in to make money. It was for service to our fellow men he said. He was glad to seo the business men of that part of the city combining together in such a manner. Mr. Stallworthy congratulated the chamber on its growth, and stated that he would be pleased to donate £lO 10s to its funds. Musical and vocal items contributed to a very pleasant evening, which concluded with a short picture. Prizes were presented as follow: First prize (silver cup): Charles Potter’s stores. Second prize (trophy): Mr. P. Parker, pork butcher. Third prize (trophy): Sanford’s Fish Mart (Mrs. E. Young). Fourth prize (trophy): Mrs. B. M. Chalmers, fruiterer. Fifth prize (trophy): Misses Lowe and Moeller, hairdressers. A number of special awards, consolation prizes and certificates "were also presented.
