Motorist Answers Negligence Charge

DEATH OF GIRL SMASH AFTER DANCE Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. A charge of driving a motor-car negligently on March 31, thereby causing the death of Maureen Doris Mitchell was preferred against John Boyd Clark in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court. •The case arose out of a motor-car accident at the Clock Tower intersection early on Sunday, March. 31. Miss Mitchell, who was in the car, died shortly after the accident. Cecil Spencer Penlington, a solicitor, who was in the car at the time, said that his last recollection of that night was at 12.7 a.m. when he was in the annexe lounge at Dixieland. He did not remember getting into the car. His next recollection was when he recovered consciousness in hospital. The Magistrate: Is there any suggestion of liquor? Detective-Sergeant Young: No. The Magistrate (to Witness): Were all members of the party sober? “Yes,” replied witness. Other witnesses gave evidence that the car seemed to be going at a fast speed. The further hearing was adjourned to secure the attendance of certain witnesses.
