A Preliminary Survey of Waikato Fields

The acceptances for the opening day of the Waikato meeting (Saturday and Monday) are not due until late this afternoon, and as The Sun will not be published to-morrow. Anzac Day, to-day is the opportune time to offer a few* preliminary suggestions for Saturday’s programme. The fields handicapped are indeed very bulky, and even to reduce the possibles to a quintette in each event is an exceedingly difficult proposition. But difficulties are only made to be overcome. However, with the fining down of the fields at acceptance time the final summing-up in Friday’s issue should offer a more congenial task. Here are the favoured horses in this brief preliminary review of Saturday’s fields; FRANKTON HURDLES.—Vivo, Highflown, Ripon Abbey, Komak and Golden Wedding. MAIDEN STAKES.— Parfait Amour, Just Nell, Measurer, Prince of Orange and Look Out. JUVENILE HANDICAP.—Awamutu, Bennie, Pellette, Praetor and Royal Finance. STOREY MEMORIAL CUP.—King Lu, Corinax, Hyde Park, Le Choucas and Wenday. LINLEY HACK HANDICAP.-Maori Boy, Black Maire, Kaha, Brilliant Light and Indolent. PUKETAHA HIGH-WEIGHT.—Schorr, Lorient 11., Modest Boy, Queen Arch and Mithra. PRESIDENT’S HAN DlCAP.—Benzora, Vallar, Kingfield, Lady Quex and Dobbin. BEERESCOURT HACK.—British King, Valuation, Some Lady, Brilliant Light and Standfast.

Nelson Cup Has An Even Field PROSPECTS FOR FRIDAY Quite an interesting card is to be staged by the Nelson Jockey Club at its fine Richmond course on Friday and Saturday. Hitherto the fields have been rather lean, but all-round the acceptances are excellent for Friday’s events. Fourteen left in the Cup is almost an unheardof field there, and the class too is good, with several improving handicap horses engaged. There are nine in the sprint, this being easily the smallest number in any of the galloping events, so that the district noted for its apples, sunshine and cider should be well catered for at this fixture. The following horses promise to be particularly well supported in their engagements on Friday, opening day: Novice Stakes.— Royal Lover and Acredity. Richmond Trot. Hardiness-Fair Lady bracket and Loch Bank. Nelson Cup.—Atholspear, or if absent, Rameses. Stewards’ Handicap.—Last Crust and Nastori. Waimea Handicap.—Spearmiss, or if absent Rabbi. Wai-Iti Trot. Belle o’ Mine and Lady Bee. Hope Hack. Shining Star and Freeze Out. Electric. Hack. Arrow Boy and Second Thought. NOVICE STAKES Of £SO; 5 furlongs; two-year-olds, 7.11; others, S.S.

KAITI AS HURDLER NELSON PROSPECTS TOPICS FROM TRENTHAM ( Special to THE SU.X) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The next meeting to engage the attention of trainers in these parts is that at Nelson this week, and a number of the horses which are to race there on Friday and Saturday went across from Wellington to-night. Black Mint is expected to race well at Nelson. ' He galloped a mile this morning in 1.47, and went smoothly all the way. No announcement has been made yet as to who is to ride him in the Nelson Cup. Hunting Call will touch a short price in the Novice Stakes if taken to Nelson, but as trainer J. Lowe leaves for Sydney on Friday, it is probable that the two-year-old will not make the trip to the meeting. A Cup Fancy Rameses will be one of the favourites for the Nelson Cup, despite a penalty for winning at Masterton. He is one of the form horses, and will have the services of A. E. Ellis. B. Burgess stated at Hastings that he might not make the trip to Nelson, where he has Atholspear and Spearmiss engaged. If he takes them over, both should win stake money, as they are at the top of their form at present. Spearmiss would be very hard to beat in the hack mile, and Atholspear would go a great race in the Cup. Probably both would start favourite. It is a long while since First Acre has had a race, but he is in good heart, and he might not return from Nelson empty-handed. Good races went to the credit of Second Thought at both Masterton and Hastings, and he is sure to be in demand at Nelson, where the class he will meet is not very strong. Last Crust has improved since he raced at Masterton, where he brought off a huge surprise, and as ho galloped fairly well over half a mile at Trenthani this morning, he should be able to give a good account of himself in the open sprint races at Nelson. Oratrix is in work again at Trentham, and Concentrate is being kept going. A trip to Australia for the pair, and perhaps one or two others, is in view. * Atareria pleased his trainer by his showing on the second day of the Hawke’s Bay meeting, and he is to be raced over hurdles at Hawera. Knapp seems to have reformed him to a very great extent, and he should pay Lis way during the winter months. Vigilance for the Stud Vigilance has finished racing. She has gone in the wind, and an operation is not to be attempted. She will be 'sent to the stud. , Desert Lad has been a disappointment of late, and is now in the sale list. Tie was a very unlucky runner at the Hawke’s Bay meeting. Kaiti has been tried as a jumper, and clears hurdles well. It is intended to race him in hurdle events later in the winter, but probably lie will also do some racing on the. flat. Great Charter is due for a win soon. He showed plenty of pace at Hastings, but failed for want of a race on the opening day, and on the second day was beaten by a head, after having to go round the field on the home bend, whereas the winner got through on the rails.

Hunting Boy has finished racing for the season, and is not to be put ?nto work again till well on in the spring.
