SUPPORT FOR WOMEN

CANDIDATES MEET MEMBERS' PAST SUCCESSES , The Women’s Haeremai Club held a meeting of women in St. James’s Hall last evening to gain support for the women candidates for the City Council and for the Hospital Board. Dr. Buckley Turkington presided over a large attendance. Mrs. A. D. Campbell, Mayoress of Auckland, strongly advocated the claims of women to seats on public bodies. She said she could never have carried out all her duties but for the help from the women members of the council. When the time came for the women of Auckland to record their votes she hoped that they would show their appreciation of what women members had done for them. Miss Ellen Melville, of the City Council, stressed the point that as a rule the public never heard of the council’s successes. Only the failures were heard about. As an instance of this, she described the work of the traffic department, which, she said, had been a great success. Miss A. Basten, of the City Council, said the male members of public bodies were very ready to listen to suggestions for the benefit of women and children, but the women had to be on the spot to make the suggestions., Team work was absolutely necessary among women. The activities of the Hospital Board were described by Mrs. Alfred Kidd, a member of the board. She maintained that unemployment relief, one of the causes in the increase in hospital expenditure, was a national work, and should he met by the Government. The burden of it should not he thrown on to the hospital boards. Addresses were also given by Mrs. M. M. Dreaver and Miss I. McCready, who are standing for the Hospital Board, by Mrs. Victor Maeky, a candidate for the City Council, and by Miss Carnachan, president of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women.
