BOARD OR BOROUGH?
O. ROSKILL’S PROBLEM COMMISSION SITS A commission to inquire and report on the petition that has been made by Mount Roskill residents asking that the control of the district be vested in a borough council instead of a road board as at present, commenced its sittings in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. rpHE commissioners are Mr. K. C. A Cutten, S.M.. Mr. O. N. Campbell, Commissioner of Crown Lands, and Mr. C. W. Shilcott, district valuer. Mr. V. R. Meredith is appearing tor the Mount Roskill Road Board and Mr. G. P. Finlay tor the South Roskill Ratepayers’ Association. Other questions for the consideration of the commission are whether tlia district is suitable for municipal control and whether any alteration to boundaries are necessary or advisable. Mr. Meredith pointed out that the main point for consideration was ivhether Mount Roskill was suitable tor municipal control. It was not j>pen to objectors to state that the district was unsuitable for municipal control as a petition had already been lodged for amalgamation with the city which, of course, meant municipal control. Mr. Finlay denied that objectors opposed the foundation of a borough. They wished to know whether or not -oral lands should be part of the borough. In Mount Roskill there were congested areas like Greenwood's Corner which were quite suited for municipal control, but there were also ex--.ensive tracts of land that were better off under the existing system. In the opinion of Mr. Cutten it was no use the commission making a (commendation on a technical point. We must hear what everyone has to say," he declared. The sitting was adjourned at 11.15 io enable the commissioners to inspect liis district.
